A Fare Question

Posted by Fisk Ave Jim on Thu Sep 10 09:09:08 2026

I'm in town for 9/11. I'm going from Woodside to Fulton St (#7 to #4). I haven't ridden the NYC subways since the last time I was down at Ground Zero 5 years ago for the 20th remembrance. My question is since the metrocard is history, can I ride using a debit or credit card?

I have been able to ride using a credit card; no prearrangement required. I'm sure debit card works too.

Yep, or your phone if you have it attached to a card.

Jim: I recall that your brother Arthur died on 9-11. I believe that he was a VP at Marsh & McLennon Associates. Next to their headquarters in
midtown there is plaza with a memorial to those members of the firm who lost their lives on 9-11. You brothers name is inscribed there. May he rest in peace.

Yes. He was a senior VP for taxation and finance for Marsh & McLennon. His office was on the 98th fl of the north tower. The plane came in there so fast that before he realized anything wrong he was already dead. He left a wife and 3 kids. About 6 months later the medical examiners office called and said they found "a piece of him". It was a 5 inch section of forearm matched up via DNA samples given by my mother. That was all that was left of him. The rest is most likely in that landfill in Staten Island.
Anyway, Marsh & McLennon relocated to AFAIK around 6th Ave in the 50s. I've been there once about 23 years ago.
So thank you, Larry. We were working in the same office on that day from hell...a day I will never forget.

Yes, as long as you can usually tap to pay at ordinary merchants. If you happen to use buses and are aiming for free transfers at all during your stay, use the same card in order to ensure the transfer privilege kick in. I know 9/11 is a somber reason to travel, but I still hope you like the convenience of not worrying about MetroCard balances/purchases.

Yeah. sometimes its the little details that can complicate things. I don't expect to need any busses. I was "old school" conditioned. Last time just buy a single ride metrocard & that was that. Progress requires adjustment I guess.
