Tuscarora Almanac for September 8
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Sep 8 10:55:28 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for September 8 1910 – from The Book of First Runs The Long island Railroad begins electrified train service through the East River Tunnels. 1935 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of streetcar service in Lowell, Massaachusetts. 1958 – from The Book of First Runs Night time Rockaway Shuttles begin “Round-Robin” operation. These trains will run from Euclid Avenue to Rockaway Park, change ends and run to Far Rockaway via Hammels Wye and then change ends again and run back to Euclid Avenue. 1989 – from The Book of Last Runs The following entry was prepared and written by Mr.William A.Padron and is included here with his kind permission. This Date In NYC Transit History: Friday, September 8, 1989 [25 years ago]... As best it can be determined, the last known recorded run of R-10 cars in regular passenger service was on that date mentioned above. It was said that the final train was the 7:36am put-in from Rockaway Park Yard, and the consist of the cars were n/#3209-3157-2961-3159-3181-3169-3008-3168/s. At that time, and due to a Con Ed asbestos problem along the IND 8th Avenue line at 50th Street, "C" service only operated as far north as 34th Street-Penn Station. There was said be an observation of this same R-10 train on Friday, September 15, 1989, but there was no further detail or confirmation if it was in actual passenger service, or simply being transferred from yard to another for disposal as scrap. The "C" line assignment sheet during the full week of September 11-15, 1989 did not list any R-10's at all. (Source: The "Bulletin", New York Division, Electric Railroaders' Association, October 1989 issue.) 2001 – from The Book of First Runs This is the first day of operation of the "V" Queens - 6th Avenue Local. Regular service on the "V" will not begin until December 17 however the new service plan was in operation for fifteen hours today as a test of the new schedules. Ed note: September 8 was a Saturday. I rode the “V” that day for the first time. I was enroute to the Hoboken Festival. Remember them? 2018 – from The Book of First Runs The Cortlandt Street station on the IRT South Ferry line re-opens after having been closed since September 11, 2001. The station and about one thousand feet of tunnel were destroyed with the collapse of the Word Trade Center Towers. The line itself re-opened on August 31, 2002 restoring service between Chambers Street and South Ferry stations. Cortlandt Street remained closed due to ongoing construction at the WTC site. They had the last of the R10s, with added intercoms, and then the R27/30s, then the R32s. They had the R4s after the R1s were retired and these were in terrible shape compared to the R6/7/9s on QBL.

The rush-hour E trains ran express in Manhattan (and continued on to Brooklyn), so we had to change from the lower level at 42 St and go upstairs for the CC, which stopped at 23 St. The arnine CCs were in much worse condition than the Queens arnines. Some years later, after some service changes, the E stopped going to Brooklyn and became an 8 Av local at all times, so the change at 42 St was no longer necessary. The added R10 intercoms were always awkward, because the conductors still had to go between cars to open and close the doors, then come back in and go into the cab to make the announcements, then go back out to control the doors.

They got all the old clunkers some of which were in service with bad motors cut out resulting in a bang every time the train started up from a station stop. It was a challenge for the train operators.

In fact they were pulled off the D at some point but ended up coming back for whatever reason. I went to Lehman for a year and would watch the CC trains laying up back in CCY and they were all R4s, maybe some R6s.

Never rode on them up CPW on the dash until July 29, 2012 during a museum trip.

And they were in worse shape than the R4s on the CC I mentioned. These cars were barely 35 years old at the time. Meanwhile the QBL cars were still in decent shape but were newer too.
