Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sun Aug 23 11:09:05 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for August 23 1920 – from The Book of First Runs The IRT Eastern Parkway Line is extended from Atlantic Avenue to Utica Avenue. At first all trains use the express tracks between Atlantic Avenue and Franklin Avenue as the local stations are not completed. New stations are opened at Nostrand Avenue, Kingston Avenue and Utica Avenue. The local stations at Bergen Street, Grand Army Plaza and Brooklyn Museum will open on October 10, 1920. The IRT Nostrand Avenue Line begins service between Franklin Avenue Station on the Eastern Parkway Line and Flatbush Avenue Terminal. 1954 – from The Book of Wrecks IND R-6 1079 is wrecked in a collision at 205th Street. She will be scrapped in July 1958. 1966 – from The Book of First Runs This is the first day of operation of the R-38’s in passenger service. A brief ceremony was held at the IND Queens Plaza Station. The first train was an “F” Queens-6th Avenue Express and the consist was (s) 3963-3962, 3967-3966, 3955-3954, 3960-3961 and 3956-3957. The next train was an “E 8th Avenue Express and the consist was (s) 3950-3951, 3953-3952, 3965-3964, 3958-3959 and 3968-3969. Ed.Note: The summer of 1966 witnessed an acute shortage of equipment on the IND Queens Lines due to so many cars awaiting maintenance in the Jamaica Yard. The first twenty R-38’s had been delivered to the TA when further deliveries were suspended due to a strike at the St. Louis Car Company. These cars were pressed into service to fill the gap. Thirty two R-16’s were sent over from the BMT and placed in service on the “GG”. Their place was taken by BMT Standards recalled from the scrap line. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

And on that same day in 1966, The Beatles performed at Toilet Bowl I as their final US tour was winding down. There were quite a few empty seats; the concert did not sell out. A number of years ago, one of the home shopping channels, QVC IINM, offered unsold tickets from that concert. Each ticket was mounted on a plaque with a certificate of authenticity. I didn't order one. |
