Congratulations, we have a winnah here. 61st facing NE across from the LIRR Woodside Sta taken in the late 20s or early 30s is correct. Shown In the picture with a little snippet of the Flushing line is the only entrance (at the time) to the LIRR. The ticket office was a short walk up a few stairs. As a kid, on the corner we used to board the Triboro Coach Q-53 busses to Rockaway Park for 55 cents one way or 85 cents round trip. Planes to/from LaGuardia fly right over that spot. |

When I saw I won the "Guess the Location" by defeating all comers, I went to Google Maps for an html (embed) download (I hope you can see the image.) This is the closest I could find to the intersection I remember from a few weeks ago. I think the left side points northeast up 61st and the right side overhead mirrors the overhead on the extreme right side of the photo you posted. This victory by me might well be the highlight of my life since they are few and far between. I am something like two for forever which, since I probably entered these things a hundred times, is a batting average of .020 which is not good. |
