Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Aug 22 17:05:32 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for August 221948 – from The Book of Last Runs The last four streetcar lines in The Bronx are converted to bus operation which will be provided by the Surface Transportation Corporation. The routes are: B – Boston Road to Bx-26 Boston Road Morris Park Avenue S – Southern Boulevard to Bx-31 T – Tremont Avenue to Bx-40 V – Williamsbridge to Bx-28. It should be noted that the northern Bronx will continue to be served by Westchester County streetcars until 1952. 1965 – from The Book of Wrecks A massive water-main break at Lawrence and Willoughby Streets in the early morning hours inundates the Dekalb Avenue station causing the suspension of all service between Brooklyn and Manhattan via either the Manhattan Bridge or the Montague Street Tunnel. Service over the bridge was restored in time for the PM rush the next day. Service through the tunnel was restored in the early morning hours of Wednesday, August 25. R-32’s 3672-73, 3734-35, R-27 8224-25 and R-30 8300-01 were damaged in the flood. |

They must have come up with an eleborate plan to turn trains in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I'll bet Whitehall St. was used to turn some, if not all, trains. Atlantic Ave. and Pacific St. come to mind. I'll bet they ran a TT shuttle between 36th St. and Coney Island. |

They ran the Brighton trains to Franklin Ave and handed out paper transfers at Botanic Gardens. I believe they even had 8 car trains running. They had the shuttle trains on the local tracks between Parkside and Prospect Park and the Brighton trains would switch to the express track as normal and then switch back to enter Prospect Park. Now that I think about it maybe they were only 6 car trains.We went to the Worlds Fair that day and came back the same way, but then a QB came into Prospect Park. My guess is Whitehall and Canal St were used on the Manhattan side. I don't think they could turn that many trains at Pacific, it was just a single crossover. And Atlantic has no way of turning trains, hence Franklin Ave. |

Steve: The water-main break occurred in the early hours of Sunday, August 22, 1965. All service between the BMT southern division and Manhattan was suspended. I was out there that day. The following service ran on Sunday in Brooklyn. N- 36th Street – Coney Island QB – Franklin Avenue – Coney Island RR-36th Street – 95th Street TT – 36th Street – Coney Island Culver Shuttle – 9th Avenue – Ditmas Avenue Shuttle buses ran along Fourth Avenue between Pacific Street and 36th Street. Free transfer were then issued to the IRT at Atlantic Avenue There were two services in Manhattan. QB – Ditmars Boulevard – Canal Street RR – 57th Street – Whitehall Street. Monday, August 23 was similar except that the Franklin Avenue – Coney Island trains were not designated as QT. However single track shuttles ran between Pacific Street and 36th Street replacing the buses. They each used there own track, no switching. In Manhattan the RR ran between Forest Hills and Whitehall Street from 6 AM to 7 PM, otherwise it terminated at 57th Street. I believe (but am not sure ) that by the time of the PM rush some service was restored over the bridge with West End and Sea Beach Line train. There also was some service to the Brighton Line by way of the Sea Beach Line. By Tuesday evening there were four services running over the bridge, Brighton, West End, Sea Beach and Fourth Avenue Local. In order to provide service to Whitehall Street the TT ran between that station and Ditmars Boulevard. Full service was restored by Wednesday morning. This is the best that I can remember.
