Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Thu Aug 20 13:48:47 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for August 20 1934 – from The Book of First Runs The IRT reduces the number of conductors by running “combination” Hi-V trains. Six and ten car trains will have cars with manually operated doors in the front and rear positions while cars in the center will have MUDC. 1959 – from The Book of First Runs IRT Lo-V Motors enter service today on BMT Route No 5 Culver Line. They have been outfitted with flanges to cover the gap between the cars and the stations. Lo-Vmotors 4581, 4583 and 4585 through 4605 will eventually see service on the BMT. Larry,RedbirdR33 |

IINM two conductors were used on those IRT trains. The dooes at the very ends weren't used, so each conductor had to contend with one manual door. The center doors on the Hi-Vs were remote controlled. |

The center doors on the battleship cars were NOT remote controlled. While they were pneumatically controlled. the door control lever only operated the center door on the car that the C/R was operating from. |

In the case of the mainline Hi-Vs it was most likely a matter of money. The IRT only converted enough battleship cars to MUDC as necessary to cut down on the number of C/Rs per train but since 10 car trains still needed 2 C/Rs anyhow the company felt the expense was unnecessary. In the cars of the Composites, it was a matter of weight since additional pneumatic door engines would have made the cars too heavy for the Manhattan el structures |

Steve: The Deck-Roofs never received MUDC. That is while you will usually see them operating on the end of trains with the regular Hi-V's. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
