CLASSIC PHOTOS: SEASHORE TROLLEY MUSEUM |

Posted by Jersey Mike on Wed Aug 12 15:36:49 2026 Often referred to as the gold standard in streetcar museums, the Seashore Trolley Museum is unfortunately a bit off my beaten path being both in Maine and also transit inaccessible. However back in July of 2004 I did make the journey with some friends which checked off the box in a similar fashion to my one and only trip to the Shoreline Trolley Museum in 2005. This set ( mirror ) also includes photos from my Amtrak trip to and from New Englande.Arriving at Baltimore Penn Station I found GP40WH-2 #69 along with an elusive pair of AEM-7's with #4900 (nice) and AEM-7 replacement HHP-8 #4910. Despite both Amtrak's and SEPTA's AEM-7 fleets soldiering on for another decade, the MARC units generally vanished from public view before winding up at the Locust Point shoppes. ![]() ![]() ![]() If I recall correctly my traveling companion joined me in New Haven to continue on to Boston via train. Once in Boston our local host treated us to a tour of the MBTA's Cabot Car Shoppes where the Red Line fleet is maintained. The 01500 and 01600 cars were already over 30 years old and have subsequently turned 50. ![]() ![]() A new cam controller had just been delivered from the Everett shoppes for the purely DC-drive 01500/01600/01700 cars. Everett had been the Orange Line shoppes until the line was rerouted up to MBTA Reading Line to Oak Park, but still would perform component refurbishment. ![]() The Seashore Trolley Museum can be considered the "Boston" streetcar museum in the same way that Shore Line is the "New York" museum. It also has quite a few bits of preserved infrastructure such as this copper clad Orange Line tower and motor generator set for converting AC power to DC. ![]() ![]() It also has an extensive collection of rapid transit vehicles from all over the country. Their literal party piece is a State of the Art Car, which can in fact be rented for parties. ![]() ![]() In addition to vintage wayside automatic block signals, Seashore used this "token" system to implement traffic control. The system could support platoons of either 5 or 6 streetcars. ![]() Out that day were SEPTA painted PCC #2709, British Columbia car #1267, Montreal Car #957, Connecticut Car #838 and Eastern Mass #4387. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Due to its mile long main line Seashore can run former third rail rapid transit cars after a conversion to trolley pole current collection. NYCTA R4 #800 and PTC Bridge Line car #1023 are two examples that have had this modification carried out. ![]() ![]() From the MBTA the museum had a 01400 series Red Line car, an 01100 series orange line car and even an 0500 series Blue Line car. ![]() ![]() Seashore also has several other Philly area treasures including a Brill Bullet, a ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Seashore even has a few heavy rail commuter cars such as LIRR MP54 #4027 and South Shore interurban car #32, ![]() For year round operation the museum even maintains ex-MBTA snow sweeper #5159. ![]() I took several rides thar day but I only seemed to get photos of the #857 / #1267 double feature. My friend and I returned to Connecticut that night via Amtrak's Train 67 departing South Station around 9pm. After staying a few days with her in CT I started by trip back to Baltimore at New Haven. That mornings single car Springfield shuttle was powered by Phase IV heritage painted P42DC #111. ![]() Also spotted at New Haven were Metro North M2 car #8423 and #8417 and Amtrak AEM-7 #917 at the head of a northbound Regional train. ![]() ![]() My train soon arrived powered by AEM-7 #929. ![]() Passing Philly I got my first good look at what would become the 30th St Station parking desk that provides a fantastic vantage point overlooking the Penn Coach Yards and Race Street engine terminal. ![]() That's pretty much it for the trip. I would recommend checking out the full set for all of the photos I had to leave out for the sake of brevity. |

I wonder if that Big Orange South Shore car is operable. Then again, it ran on 1500 VDC. They also have Old Pullman 225 from Chicago.IRM can be considered Chicago's streetcar museum, although East Troy and Fox River can make the same claim. |
