Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Jul 13 11:18:43 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for July 13 1916 – from The Book of Wrecks The IRT Nostrand Avenue Line was built using a type of construction known as “cut and cover”. A trench is dug down the middle of the street and a temporary covering of planks and beams is erected. This permits the operation of streetcars and other vehicles while work on the subway lines continues. Unfortunately the covering was not always failsafe and on July 13, 1916 the subway roof collapsed under the weight of BRT trolley car 4312 causing serious damage. The collapse occurred in the vicinity of Tilden Street and Beverly Road. 4312 was a double truck convertible built by the Laconia (NH) Car Company in 1906. Source: Morris, John E. (2020) Subway, The Curiosities, Secrets, and Unofficial History of the New York City Transit System, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers. Thanks to Andy and Q-65A for the exact date and location. 1950 – from The Book of Service Changes Except for rush hours Third Avenue El service is cut back from East 241st Street to Gun Hill Road. Source: Mr Bernard Linder, October 1964 1953 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the very last day of steam locomotive operation on the Lackawanna Railroad. Main Line steam service came to an end on June 5. Steam switchers continued to operate in the Scranton Yard until the coal bunkers ran out. The final run was made by made by 0-8-0 232. 1976 – from The Book of Wrecks A Conrail New Haven Line passenger train composed of M-2 cars crashed into another train while entering the New Canaan Station. One passenger was killed and 25 injured. 1999 – from The Book of Last Runs The lower level track (D3) at the 42 Street Station of the IND 8th Avenue Line is permanently taken out of service. It had been used by the “S” Aqueduct Special from 1959 to 1981 and by southbound rush hour “E” 8th Avenue Express from about March 23, 1970 to April 14, 1975. 2015 – from The Book of Last Runs The visitor’s center in front of Queens Borough Hall is closed due to low patronage. It had been located in R-33 9075 painted in the Redbird II scheme. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
