Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Jun 29 10:24:29 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for June 28 1956 – from The Book of First Runs The New York City Transit Authority begins train service to the Rockaways . Service will run from Rockaway Boulevard on the Liberty Avenue Line to Rockaway Park and Wavecrest. The inaugural run is made by a train of the then new R-16’s. The front of the train carries a banner reading: “Rockaway Here We Come” By order of the mayor June 28, 1956 was designated as “Rockaway Day”. So the Wavecrest trains would relay on the current switches between 25 and Far Rockaway.I'm guessing the tower operator used the tower in Far Rockaway to relay trains at the time. |

I have seen pictures taken from the elevated LIRR platforms which show the end of an IND train which was in the process of being relayed on the trackage between Wavecrest and Far Rockaway. The elevated LIRR station continued in operation after the structure was split and was replaced by the current ground level station at Nameoke Avenue in February 1958. |
