Tuscarora Almanac for June 28

1956 – from The Book of First Runs

The New York City Transit Authority begins train service to the Rockaways . Service will run from Rockaway Boulevard on the Liberty Avenue Line to Rockaway Park and Wavecrest.

The inaugural run is made by a train of the then new R-16’s. The front of the train carries a banner reading: “Rockaway Here We Come”

By order of the mayor June 28, 1956 was designated as “Rockaway Day”.

Note: Until a new station within city limits can be constructed at Far Rockaway the Wavecrest
Station will serve as a temporary station.

2026 marks the seventieth year of service to the Rockaways.
