W.B.'s Rail Almanac for June 27th

Posted by W.B. on Sat Jun 27 17:11:55 2026

June 27, 2010 - The Book of Last Runs and Route Service Changes

New York City
New York City Transit Authority
NYC Subway

Due to budget cutbacks, service along many subway lines is either discontinued or altered, as follows:
- G: Northernmost terminus cut way back from along Queens Boulevard to Court Square.
- M: Rerouted from Nassau Street and West End line, to Sixth Avenue and Queens Boulevard to 71st and Continental Avenues; ironically, this had the effect of bringing back regular service along the Chrystie Street connection between Broadway-Lafayette Street and Essex Street for the first time since the K train was discontinued on August 27, 1976 due to that round of service cutbacks.
- N - Broadway: Made into a local at all times.
- Q - Broadway: Extended along the route previously served by the W.
- The V - Sixth Avenue and W - Broadway lines are discontinued.
In addition, frequency of weekend service is sharply reduced; and ball park service along the Staten Island Railway to serve those going to Staten Island Yankees' games is also discontinued.

Unlike the K train, the M is always crowded. Williamsburg and Bushwick have changed. Service to Nassau St from Dekalb Ave was always empty. I would take it occasionally if the M was at Dekalb already up to Chambers St for the 4/5. The few people on it got off at Lawrence/Jay and Court St.

The M/V combo was the death sentence for the R44's.

It was because of this service change (the early put in W I used to ride on from Pacific St. (now Barclays Center-Atlantic Ave) to Whitehall St. was discontinued) that I switched to the 4/5 to get to work from the LIRR Atlantic Terminal. I was very happy to get the W back several years later as I often used it to get to midtown from lower Manhattan.

But the Wilbur/Wilma was eventually brought back when the 2nd Ave. line opened.
