Can't speak for Atlamta, but on the BART system my recent trips have been much as were 20 years ago--mostly civil riders. With my white hair I get offered the geezer seets without having to ask, and the busking boom box weilders are rarer. FWIW BART claims crime has decreased. |

I was on MARTA recently and felt much less at ease than on the NYC subway. On MARTA I felt like I had to really observe as many cars as possible from the outside before running to the one I wanted (though more to enjoy the ride and not so much because I feared for my life).I did notice police step in from the platform to look into the car once (in the two days I was there), but I also did notice a captain (4 stripes) in my car on the way to the airport. He looked like he did this all the time. No interest in going back to see MARTA, no matter how new the cars get. In terms of scenery, it's nothing you can't experience on, for example, the WMATA Silver Line. The most interesting thing IMO was the rock wall at Peachtree Center. NYC's no picnic, but the trains are longer, run more often, and have so many more people that an illusion of safety (real or otherwise) is formed. |

A long, long time ago in Black Patch lore, I had a "hat" surprise me (totally a rookie mistake and my fault) by smashing his Walkman (back when they were still the big rectangles with the cassette and radio band) on the bridge of my nose as I was collaring him, blood gushed out out my nose and the chase was on, I chased this felonious flyer for what seemed like an eternity although it was 3 blocks at most. After what seemed like half of the police agencies and commands Manhattan showed up, we apprehended him, gave him a beatin' that made Rodney King looked tame, fucked him up real good. I go to St. Vinny's to get my nose looked at. Just broken, that was all. Anyway, collar gets reassigned to my friend KR and he's at Bellevue with perp, have to meet him to give him pertinent info. Perp os in hospital bed , I asked him why he was so stupid to do that when all he would have got was a DAT. He told me "I'm black, we are told to never obey the police and make it easy, as we getting arrested anyway!" So then I said but look at you now, in the hospital all fucked up, he told me"yeah, but I could have also got away!" THAT'S their mindset!! |

Speaking of geezers, As a one time ticket agent at Metro North, we were "discouraged" to ask someone at the window that appeared to be in advanced age if they wanted a "senior" ticket. If they didnt ask, dont automatically suggest buying a senior ticket. If they just looked older and not qualified for the senior rate, some would get highly insulted and here comes a complaint |

Especially with fewer trains and fewer people around than a typical NYC setting (on the Saturday I was there MARTA's gold line was running only every 15 minutes, with the red line being a branch shuttle), you can get information from scanning the cars from the platform. I was looking for the car with the most typical commuters, regardless of race. A typical commuter is sitting upright, usually only needing one seat, often (but not necessarily) on their electronic device or with earphones on, and showing no indications that they prefer to stay on the train (railfans of course being an outlier here!).I also notice that outside NYC (but within the US) strangers are more likely to talk to each other. I don't want to talk during my ride to anyone. So the more devices, earphones, and people staring at the floor, the better. |
