Los Angeles D line extension opened today

Posted by Easy on Fri May 8 20:44:07 2026

Very impressive new line extension! I was there for the first train East that allowed riders from La Cienega. Should be videos and photos from others being uploaded this weekend.

Re: Section 1 of Los Angeles D line extension opened today

A certain number 37 will have to wait next year to ride the following extensions to Brentwood.

KTLA, CW 5

Metro’s D Line extension opens, connecting downtown L.A. to Beverly Hills in about 20 minutes

After years of construction and anticipation, Metro’s long-awaited D Line extension officially opened to passengers Friday morning, giving riders a faster connection between downtown Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.

The newly opened stretch adds three underground stations along Wilshire Boulevard: Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega.

Metro officials say the expanded route can take riders from downtown Los Angeles to Beverly Hills in about 20 minutes, dramatically cutting down commute times through one of the region’s busiest traffic corridors.

“This is one of three phases of this project,” Metro Deputy COO Edna Stanley told KTLA during Friday morning’s live coverage from the Wilshire/Fairfax station. “This is the only subway line that’s opening in all of the United States for the whole year.”

The D Line, formerly known as the Purple Line, now stretches farther west from Koreatown into Mid-Wilshire and Beverly Hills, connecting riders to museums, restaurants, shopping and entertainment destinations along the Wilshire corridor.

At the Wilshire/Fairfax stop, riders can easily access Museum Row, including attractions like the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the nearby La Brea Tar Pits. The Wilshire/La Cienega station provides direct access to Beverly Hills dining and shopping areas.

Metro officials emphasized the convenience of avoiding traffic while traveling underneath Wilshire Boulevard.

“You don’t have to sit in traffic,” Stanley said. “You can ride the D.”

The extension is part of Metro’s larger effort to expand rail service ahead of the 2028 Olympics. Two additional project segments are still under construction and are expected to open by 2027, eventually extending the line farther west toward the Brentwood and Westwood areas, including the VA campus.

To celebrate the opening, Metro is offering free rides on the D Line through Monday morning at 3 a.m.

Who would believe that Angelinos would be excited about a subway line?

Wait until our D is fully erected before you compare. It may not be as long but it's pretty solid. Probably cleaner too.

I rode the LA Metro and it was pretty gross. From Santa Monica to DTLA and then on to Hollywood/Highland and back to Santa Monica.

That said, I still want to take the B train from Newkirk Plaza out to Hollywood/Highland to see Kimmel.

Yeah, you were here when it was still bad after the pandemic. Not that it's great now but it's mostly ok. The ambassadors, more security, and better fare gates have helped.

What’s with the slow speed entering the stations? Is that SOP for that system?

It's normal at the terminus stations. Not sure why it was happening at the others. On opening day there were lots of people videoing with phones and cameras extended off the platform and over the tracks but not sure if that's why.
