Airtrain Question |
|
|
Posted by Chris R16/R2730 on Sun May 3 11:23:09 2026 So i used Airtrain for the very first time this week. Due to construction rideshare app pickups have been moved out to the Howard Beach terminal. I needed to get from Terminal 5 to the pickup area and was expecting to be charged the full fare for the ride....but never was. I literally walked onto the train and off the train without even the hint of a fare control area. So how does the fare system work? People from my flight did the same thing as I did. |

My guess is that the parking lot is still "airport side" and if you attempetd to access the subway you'd be charged the fare. Did it look like you could easily just walk into the subway system from that parking lot? |

They collect the airtrain and the subway fare together at the subway entrance. I've parked there, taken an Uber from there and taken the subway. There was someone on Instagram that was saying you could walk through the lot to the A train without paying but I had to point out that it was at least a mile to walk and you're not going to do that with luggage or if you value your time, and that's assuming you're capable of the walk. He thought you could just exit the lot at that end but you can't. |

They put the ride share there to keep the cars away from the terminals so maybe it's on the Port Authority since it was their decision. I always used to park at that spot when I flew out because you could park close to the airtrain. At the other stop you'd have to walk a long way.I just looked again at the satellite and you'd have to exit to Aqueduct road, cross over the Belt Parkway and go to the Aqueduct station, and even then it isn't clear you can enter from that side. Aside from being 71 years old, I'm not doing that to cheat the PA out of a few bucks. |

So, if one were to be dropped off by auto at a JFK terminal, onecould ride the "Airtrain System" on its entirety and exit at the same JFK terminal at a prearranged time, no charge for shits and giggles! |

The front RFW between Jamaica and Federal Circle is still fun.I think they did something with the speed south of Federal Circle (on the way to/from Terminals 1/8). For some reason I remember that stretch being a lot more fun in the early years than it is now. The automated announcements also aren't as crisp as they used to be. |

When the Broad Channel bridge was shut down after Sandy they opened a gate between the JFK lot and the A train platforms effectively allowing free AirTrain rides. However the PA made no mention of this and left the faregates active which uninformed tourists continued to use. |

It always refreshing to feel as if you have gotten over!In the past some railfans have made attempts to ride the complete subway system. Has there ever been an attempt at the Airtrain system or other subway systems, like Chicago or Philly and L.A? You know RECORD TIME! |
