Tuscarora Almanac for April 4

Tuscarora Almanac for April 4

2013 – from The Book of Second Runs

The Contract II South Ferry (loop) station re-opens after having been closed since March 16, 2009. The replacement station also called South Ferry is a two track stub terminal located underneath the loop station. It was badly damaged by flood waters due to Hurricane Sandy in October 2012. (The loop station was closed for a second time on June 27, 2017 after repairs were made to the flooded lower level.)

Interesting. I wonder why they made a stub terminal instead of finding a way to keep the loop alive? I say that because it's more efficient for keeping trains moving on a busy line.

The loop can't handle 10 car trains without looping around on itself like a snake.

Yeah, with all the fuss that was required to tell people not to be in the last 5 cars, the loop terminal probably had no better capacity than the stub terminal now has. I vaguely remember repeated long messages being broadcast while the train sat at Chambers Street.

I wonder if they thought to build extensions of the loop terminal at South Ferry to allow all 10 cars to platform. As I seem to remember, the inner loop station albeit with only the center set of doors being able to open all 10 cars were able to platform.

I was thinking, maybe they could have found a way for a 10-car loop.

They probably thought if it but found it impossible due to existing obstacles.

But a looping terminal can be efficient for keeping trains moving compared to traditional terminals.

When the 7 line was extended I was thinking the same thing. I'm surprised it wasn't a loop terminal. Maybe two track loop terminal for express and locals.

My late aunt said she went around the loop once or twice without being able to get off at South Ferry during her visit to the city in 1959. She finally asked the conductor and he told her she had to be in one of the first five cars. She couldn't remember if they were R units or prewar cars. My guess it was probably Lo-Vs, since they didn't have PA systems.
