Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Mar 23 10:08:22 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for March 23 1940 – from The Book of First Runs The first R-9’s are placed in service. They are part of a 153 car order. Cars 1650-1701 are built by the American Car and Foundry Company. Cars 1702-1802 are built by the Pressed Steel Car Company. 1950 from The Book of Last Runs The IRT Westchester Avenue Branch is taken out of service. This line connected the 3rd Avenue El station at 149th Street with the West Farms Line at Jackson Avenue. Since 1946 it has only been used for non-revenue moves. 1956 – from The Book of Last Runs The Philadelphia Suburban Transportation Company discontinues service on the Strafford Branch of the Norristown Line. 1957 – from The Book of Last Runs Most Erie Railroad rush hour commuter trains are shifted from the Pavonia Avenue Terminal in Jersey City to the Hoboken Terminal of the Lackawanna Railroad. Non-Rush hour and through (long distance) passenger trains had been operating out of Hoboken since October 13, 1956. The only trains still serving the Pavonia Avenue Terminal are those of the Northern Branch and the Susquehanna Railroad. 1968 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of R-40's entered service today on the "F" Line. The consist was (s) 4351-0, 4359-8, 4352-3 and 4354-5. 1981 – from The Book of Service Changes The Lenox Avenue Line will be closed at nights and on weekend for about a year to repair the tunnel floor. No. 2 trains will run on the Lexington Avenue Line during these times and No. 3 trains will terminate at 110th Street-Lenox Avenue. Shuttle bus service will also be provided 2023 – from The Book of First Runs PATH begins operation of nine car trains on the Newark to World Trade Center Line. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

The Bergen Cutoff is what made the Westchester Ave branch superfluous.In this pic you can see the Westchester branch rising above the current 2/5 tracks.  And in this pic you can see the pillars that supported the Bergen Cutoff. The Bergen Cutoff was actually a branch off the Second Ave El before it merged with the 3rd Ave El and ran on the upper level I believe. When the 2nd Ave El was discontinued they continued running trains from Freeman on 3rd Ave. Why Freeman? I have no idea.  I saw a pic posted here once of how the Bergen cutoff branched off the upper level Westchester Ave branch. |

This video shows everything, including the view from the front of a south-bound train that had left Jackson Av as it approaches the Westchester branch interlocking, takes the Westchester branch, then branches off onto the Bergen cutoff. The Bergen Cutoff is what made the Westchester Ave branch superfluous I don't know about superfluous, because the two routes did different things. The Bergen Cutoff bypassed the 149 St station, while the rest of the Westchester branch connected to the 149 St station. It seems that both arrangements were useful. |
