R262 and R268

Posted by Q65A on Fri Mar 20 09:24:30 2026

I guess it will be a good time to start taking pictures of R62/R62A and R68/R68A (but not quite immediately):
R262 and R268
As a guy who once rode IRT SMEEs every day, seeing the red 1 bullet on an NTT feels strange....

My pleasure, Larry!

and if an option to purchase the additional 1,250 cars is exercised, to replace the R142 and R142A cars on the 2, 4 and 5 lines

Really?

Yeah that is an eye opener; the 142s seem pretty young for retirement.

By the time these cars are delivered it'll be 35-40 years for the 142s. The oldest of them are already 26 years old. If they want CBTC on the 123 or 456 or both they'd need to convert them all, and then you'd have at least a 30 year old fleet running the latest technology. That makes little sense.

Don't count your subway cars before they're funded. After all, New York and it's gopher looking governor may not have too many friends in washington and NY's tax base is getting rather anemic.

Point taken, TD.
I guess the R32s set the modern standard for longevity, and the NTTs might need to do the same thing because, as you have said, the funding for this big bill might not be coming.

Good point, zac.
I keep thinking the 142s are new cars but, as you reminded me, they're no longer new, and CBTC conversions are expensive.

The terms are 7 years, and it'll be at least a year before the contract goes out. That gets us to 2034. Add in some delay and then it is 2035. How long have we been talking about the R211 already?

I got my answer, the R211 program began in 2015. It is 2026 and we're halfway through option order 1. OO2 comes after that. It will easily be 2035-2040

Congestion pricing was never planned to preserve the subway and bus fare nor have anything to do with operating costs. Its generated revenue is to be used for capital projects.

That may be the happy horse shit they are selling today but when proposed they touted service improvements such as increasing C service to 10 cars and preserving the current fare.
