The final run left from Euclid Avenue as a "C" train at 7:23 PM and arrived at 207 Street at about 8:30 PM. The consist was (n) 4098-9, 3778-9, 3579-8, 3587-6 (s). Note that only the two north cars were R-38's and the rest were R-32's. The R-38’s a group of 200 cars built by the Saint Louis Car Division of General Steel Industries in 1966-67. The last ten cars of this order 4140-4149 were built with air-conditioning. Source: New York Division Bulletin /June 2009, article by Mr. George Chiasson. Tuscarora Despatch No. 20 The Opening of the 63rd Street Line The 63rd Street Line opened on Sunday, October 29, 1989 connecting the 57th Street-6th Avenue station in Manhattan with the new 21st Street-Queensbridge station in Queens. Intermediate stations are located at Lexington Avenue-63rd Street and Roosevelt Island. The first train was for VIP’s and ran on October 28 from the World Trade Center to Roosevelt Island. It was an eight car train of R-68 A’s; (n) 5075-5002-5162-5173-5149-5141-5034-5098. Service on the new line will be provided by the same routes that terminated at 57th Street-6th Avenue when it was a stub end terminal; B, F, Q and the JFK Express. Rt. B 6th Avenue-West End trains will run between 21st Street and Coney Island on weekend from about 6 AM to 1 Am. Rt. F 6th Avenue-Culver trains will run between 21st Street and Coney Island seven days a week from about 1AM to 6 AM. (See note 1 below) Rt. Q 6th Avenue-Brighton trains will run between 21st Street and Brighton Beach on weekdays from 6 AM to 9 PM. They will operate between 21st Street and Broadway-Lafayette Street on weekdays from about 9 PM to 1 AM. (See note 1 below) JFK Express will operate between 21st Street and Howard Beach / JFK Airport seven days a week from 6 AM to 12 midnight. Note 1: During the midnight hours Rt. F trains provided service between 21st Street and Coney Island. The signage on the train stated “This train is a “Q” between 21st St. LIC and 50th St / 6th Av and an “F” between 50th St / 6th Av and Coney Island”. Motorman on northbound trains changed the front sign from “F” to “Q” at Second Avenue. Southbound trains changed the sign from “Q” to “F” at 50th Street. The R32s had overhead bars that ended a bit short of the doors, meaning there were a few spots in each car where you were too far from the vertical poles, too far from the overhead bar, and too far from the door.The R38s had overhead bars that wrapped around all the way to the door and didn't have these unfortunate no-balance zones in each car when it was full. I missed this about the full R32 replacements that followed. |
