NJT free week last summer

Posted by B1bus on Sun Mar 1 07:08:52 2026

DId anyone take advantage of free week last summer?
I did. Rode nearly all of the stops on the lines including the river line to Camden.

They do that again and they might get assaults. I remember free rides on New Year's Eve during the 1980s and assaults happened, so they stopped that altogether.

I did. Started at Penn Station (NYC) to Secaucus Junction, explored that station (still don't understand why the upper level has turnstiles but the lower level doesn't), then switched to a Main Line diesel to Delawana and walked to Rutt's.

Then back to Hoboken and switched to the light rail to Tonnelle Ave, the last stop in North Bergen. Also rode the elevator up at the next-to-last stop to Bergenline Ave.

It's great when you can just get on and off as often as you like. I hope they do it again. The only disappointment was discovering that Hoboken is a low-level platform station, because I wanted to take my bike, but I don't think I could comfortably exit the train down the narrow steps with the bike.

The obvious applies here. NJT & NYCTA are two different agencies with different rider numbers and clientele for lack of better adjective. One New Years Eve when the MTA had the free rides, kids would buy a case(s) of beer and ride back and forth all night on the trains. The biggest problem was the condition of the equipment as in the filth, piss, vomit and empties found when the car cleaners came to work the next day and not so much crime.

Hoboken is one of the greatest railway stations/terminals in the world. High level platforms would sadly ruin it. It would kill the proportions.

But sooner or later high level platforms will become state of the art and probably ultimately required by ADA.

Absurd. You going to convert all of Metra and LA Metrolink to high platforms?

The ADA will have to be overturned eventually.

They were state of the art 50 years ago. They are already basically “required” for new construction and major renovations. But no, they will likely never become required to replace all existing low level platforms unless the costs somehow became much less via some new technology or material.

High platforms are an anachronism from the 1800s; what do you mean? The PRR's original platforms at Princeton Junction were high, and then they rebuilt them to low later; NJT (present station owner) made them high again.

"The ADA will have to be overturned eventually."

That will never happen. You'll see the return of the smoking car first.

Anything can happen if you get rid of enough RINOs.

But one thing the ADA will at least not do is get all passenger platforms converted from low to high. Amtrak sure is not going to get rid of its Superliner fleet any time soon, and there are still replacement Superliners on order UIM.

ADA regs apply to a lot more than railroads. Thats why the ADA is here to stay.

That is not a reason why it would be "here to stay".

Amtrak has publicly said no new bi-levels. As to RINOs, send them to the same re-education camps as D
