Thanks!

It never ceases to amaze me how much non-computerized effort went into enforcing transfer restrictions, even just regular bus-to-bus transfers: the printing of all that paper each day with the unique date, adjusting the cut-off manually so that the transfer couldn't be used too much later in the day, the transfer only being good at approved intersections, and the time spent at stops by the driver giving, receiving, and inspecting them.

While it seems we lost the perk of often having the transfers good for more than 2 hours (especially the early "AM or PM" types which seem like they could have been stretched out for many more hours), I think it's safe to say that all of the other perks we now have more than make up for it (being able to transfer practically anywhere including the subway).

Agree. the restrictions were rider hostile "nickel and diming" us for fares. You are spot on about wasted driver time.

With lower overall per capita productivity and lower standards of living it was worth the labor cost of performing these sorts of checks back in the day.

While you may be correct on the statistics, I always felt it marked hostility on the part of the transit company/agency as if they begrudged actually providing service.

Sorry; title seemed like there was some website where you could control your own fares and pay what you wanted . . .
