Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri Feb 6 07:10:25 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for February 6 and a Forgotten Station 1941 – from The Book of First Runs The streamlined articulated units know as "The Electroliners" begin service today on the North Shore Interurban Line between Chicago and Milwaukee. The cars are numbered as 801 A/B/C–802 A-1 and 803 A/B/C-804 A-1. The “B” units are tavern-lounge cars serving up such delicacies as electro-grilled eggs, electro-browned toast and their famous electroburgers. 1951 – from The Book of Wrecks Pennsylvania Railroad train No 733, "The Broker" derailed while crossing a temporary trestle in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The train consisted of K-4 steam engine No 2445 and eleven coaches. The engine, tender and eight coaches left the tracks and some fell down the embankment to the street below. 84 passengers were killed and over 300 injured. Hereafter No.1 trains will run between 242nd Street-Broadway and South Ferry at all times as locals. No. 2 and 3 trains will operate express providing service to Brooklyn. A “new” Broadway Thru-Express” (actually a local-express) begins operation on Monday, February 9, 1959. It will run during the rush hours in the direction of traffic bypassing 191st Street, 181st Street, 157th Street and 145th Street and then making all local stops. Northbound service during the PM rush was discontinued after the first day. 1978 – from The Book of First Runs WMATA’s Red Line is extended from Brookland-CUA to Silver Spring. The Tuscarora Book of Forgotten Stations No. 19 – Evergreen Avenue Evergreen Avenue Station Evergreen Avenue was a station on the BRT Myrtle Avenue Line located between Central Avenue and Broadway stations. Service began on July 20, 1889 and was provided by Union Elevated Railroad Company. It was a two track station with a single island platform. Service ended on September 17, 1915. This was due to the fact the Myrtle Avenue El north of Broadway was being rebuilt into a modern three tracks line and a connection was also being built to the Broadway-Brooklyn Line. I wish posters would stop referring the the pseudo “express” service that skipped selected stations north of 137th St as the “Broadway Thru Express” There was only one true Bway Thru Exp that ran for a brief period in the mid 1950s which utilized the middle track between 137th St and 96th St and was discontinued because it really didn’t save any time for passengers. The skip stop service that operated as a pseudo “express” was signed as “Local-Exp” like the Lex lcls that operated express on the Pelham Line. since they operated local on their respective trunk lines but express on their branch lines. From the time that service pattern started till it ended, it was NEVER, NEVER, NEVER referred to as the “Bway Thru Exp” by any of the passengers who rode the line or the employees who worked the line. In my early railfanning days, I used to hang out with the Bway train crews whose trains I rode to and from high school and the term “thru express” was not mentioned at any time by any of them. I lived through the transition of those west side changes somI have first hand exhaustive knowledge of what went on during that time so PLEASE get your facts straight and stop posting erroneous information! |
