Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Thu Feb 5 13:06:47 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for February 5 and a Train of the Week 1941 – from The Book of Last Runs The five-section articulated unit known as the “Green Hornet” is withdrawn from service on the No.7 Franklin Avenue Shuttle. This is the last time that she will operate in revenue service. She will be scrapped in 1942 and her aluminum carbody will be used in the war effort. Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 11 Manhattan Railway Company (1880-1903) Interborough Rapid Transit Company (1903-1930) 3rd Avenue Elevated Line 34th Street Shuttle Service Period: July 1, 1880 – July 14, 1930 The 34th Street Shuttle ran between Third Avenue and the East River with an intermediate stop at Second Avenue. The station at Third Avenue consisted of two track with a single island platform. It was at the same level and connected to the northbound platform of the 3rd Avenue El. There was a footbridge over the tracks to the downtown platform. The northernmost shuttle track connected with the northbound local track of the El. The station at Second Avenue was also two-tracked with a single island platform and directly underneath the 34th Street station of the 2nd Avenue El. The terminal at the East River also had two tracks with a single island platform. There was a short middle track west of the station for coaling and turning the steam locomotives. (This became superfluous once the line was electrified.) This terminal provided direct connections to the Long Island Railroad’s ferry service to Hunter’s Point. The track arrangement of the shuttle was such that trains probably used the same track in both directions. The line was electrified in the 1901-1903 period. The LIRR ferry service to Hunt’s Point ended on May 3, 1925. With its end most of the ridership must have dropped off the 34th Shuttle was discontinued on July 14, 1930. With NYU/Langone and Bellevue hospitals, the ferries, and just an increase in activity in that area it would be great to have some sort of transport from the area. Maybe, I'm dreaming here, the 2nd Ave subway will get built to serve it. |
