Did youbreally think that the MTA can afford spare parts? This is far cheaper.

Looks like someone drove onto the tracks as if trying to drive along the trackway rather than across. It's either a "hey watch this!", a drugaholic escapade, or actions of someone who should not have a driver's license of any kind when stone sober.

Yes, drivers absolutely must not look out through the windshield. Only old people do that, and who wants to be old?

Well, my idea is that we should watch where we're f'ing driving, which is apparently considered hopelessly un-hip.
I'm fully OK with being that old guy who refuses to text, stare at CarPlay screen or drive around RR gates when driving. Maybe I didn't express this very well. :-|

How do you navigate through unfamiliar areas?

I'm not that old, but I did start to drive in the "before times," so I had to look at physical maps and try to memorize directions. I don't do that anymore.

With all the driving I do back & forth from Western Pa. I need to know various alternate routes besides the interstates. For that I have a GPS, WAZE & a good old fashioned Rand McNally spiral bound road atlas. I got all my bases covered. All 3 might come in handy when I drive out to Yosemite once the weather gets nice and the birds start chirping!

If I still owned a car and drove a lot, I'd probably get myself a GPS. But I don't see the point of renting one when I rent a car. I would probably have to spend more time than it's worth familiarizing myself with that car's GPS.

Instead, I use paper maps and Google Maps traffic feature. It worked decently well getting back from northern Vermont to Albany after the eclipse, though I could have done better if I had been omniscient.

Also, riding in other people's cars when they rely on GPS, I'm not really impressed with their ability to use it. If something goes the slightest bit wrong, they are at the mercy of the GPS. They have no idea where they are.

Here's a hypothetical question (though it really happened to me). I'm in Northhampton MA and want to get back to NYC. It's Thanksgiving time and there's a bad snowstorm coming. The roads are packed. Do I take I84 and I684, I91 and the Merritt, or I91 and I95?

I used Google Maps to convince myself I84 was the best. My in-laws used the Merritt and took easily half an hour longer for the trip.

Would you expect a decent GPS system to figure out the best route given current traffic conditions?

You’re a lot of things but I didn’t expect that you were this clueless about how internet-enabled navigation services work. Seek help. Now.
