Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Jan 31 09:45:41 2026 Tuscarora Almanac for January 31 and a Forgotten Station 1914 – from The Book of First Runs The 38th Street Station on the 6th Avenue El opens. The 6th Avenue line had opened on June 5, 1878 between 58th Street and Rector Street but there was no station between 33rd Street and 42nd Street. 38th Street was a two track station with two side platforms. It remained in use until December 4, 1938 1933 – from The Book of First Runs The IND 8th Avenue Line is extended from Chambers Street, Manhattan to Jay Street, Brooklyn. New stations are opened at Broadway-Nassau Street and Jay Street-Borough Hall. High Street will not open until June 24, 1933. 2000- from The Book of First Runs Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor Line is electrified between New Haven and Boston. 2011 – from The Book of First Runs The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail Line is extended from 22nd Street to 8th Street in Bayonne, New Jersey. 2017- from The Book of Last Runs (in Memoriam) Gettyburg, Pennsylvania Mr. Karl Burkhart, also known as Karl B of Gettysburg, Pennyslvania passed away today. He was a dyed-in-the-wool railfan and a gentleman of the old school. I met Karl a few times at the Hoboken Festival. We corresponded frequently and he was a contributor to the Almanac. He enjoyed going to railfan shows and eagerly looked forward to the one in York, Pennsylvania every year. As everyone here knows his favorite rail line was the BRT Lexington Avenue Elevated. I would like to think that he rode a train of BU’s to his final destination. No doubt Selkirk and Dante were waiting for him at the terminal. Thank you to Mr. Train Dude for informing us of this sad news The Tuscarora Book of Forgotten Stations No. 15 – Willets Point Boulevard Interborough Rapid Transit Company Corona-Flushing Line Willets Point Boulevard Corona, New York Willets Point Boulevard station on the IRT Corona Line opened on May 14, 1927 and was the eastern terminus of the line until January 21, 1928 when service was extended to Main Street, Flushing. This was a three track local station with two side platforms. In the middle 1930’s plans were made for a “World’s Fair” to be held in Flushing Meadow Park. It was realized that the original station would be in adequate for the expected crowds so a new station was built several hundred feet west of the earlier one. This would be a three track express station with two side platforms and one island platform. This station was placed in service sometime in 1938 or 1939, certainly prior to the opening of the Fair in April 1939. The old station was closed at this time although parts of it remain. The under platform mezzanine of the original station is still in place although the stairways to the street below have been removed. A fairly long section of the former Manhattan bound platform is intact and attached to the current platform though it is separated from it by a gate.
