Unfortunately many people who are unfamiliar with the area rely on GPS devices which often dispense erroneous information. I heard of a similar incident a few years ago in which a GPS directed the driver to turn into what was also a railroad ROW. Now that doesn’t necessarily absolve the driver of the responsibility of being observant enough to realize that despite the GPS’s directions, if he/she sees a railroad track DON’T drive onto it. In any event, once the car was in a position where it could not be moved out of danger, it would have made sense to use a cell phone, which I’m sure at least one of them had, to dial 911 and explain the situation which might have given the 911 operator the opportunity to notify BNSF and possibly have the train stopped in time to avoid the accident. |

Has happened a few times at BERA at different locations. They have even driven their auto over a trestle or called 911 saying they are stuck on train tracks with overhead wires and then they shut down the Northeast Corridor (That was years ago). Usually it is someone DWI. Sometimes the ties are all torn up and sometimes there is little damage, all depends how they "line up". |
