Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Thu Jan 1 10:51:31 2026 Firstly let me wish all here a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Tuscarora New Almanac for January 1 and Transit Trivia 1936 – from The Book of First Runs The IND Houston Street is opened between West 4 Street and East Broadway. 1960 – from The Book of First Runs The Yonkers Railroad Company changes its name to the Yonkers Transit Corporation. 1969 – from The Book of First Runs The Penn Central Transportation Company takes over the operations of the New Haven Railroad by order of the Interstate Commerce Commission. 1990 – from The Book of Last Runs Most free transfers between subway and buses are discontinued. The only two remaining are at Rockaway Parkway-Canarsie to the B-42 and at 3rd Avenue-149th Street to the Bx-55. 2017- from The Book of First Runs The first section of the Second Avenue Subway finally opened today. The first northbound originated at 57th Street on the northbound express track A-4.The consist was 9108-12 and 9113-17. The train was held at 63rd Street for several minutes. Once we resumed our journey we passed the first southbound train at 72nd Street. The consist of the first southbound train was 8957-53 and 8848-52. Many people were there railfans and normal folks alike and everyone seemed to be having a good time. Two handouts were available. A “Second Avenue Subway Grand Opening” map. This is larger than the regular map. One side displays the city wide subway maps and a blowup of the midtown area. The other side feature photo and artworks from the new subway and the old els. Also available was a flyer for the new “Q” service. In addition to myself Sub-Chat was represented by Bill Newkirk, Fred G and Wakefield –East 241, Union Tpke, Allan, Catfish 44, William Padron , R32-3672, HenryR32#3730, Bill from Maspeth, Andy and Jailhouse Doc. If any other were there please let me known and I will add your name to roll. Thanks to Henry and William for the consist of the first southbound train. The Tuscarora Book of Transit Trivia No 1 – Saintly Stations Many streets and towns in the New York area are named after saints. However only a few subway and railroad stations carry their names. There is St. Lawrence station on the IRT Pelham Line in The Bronx. In the days of long ago there was a St. Marks Avenue station on the BMT Fifth Avenue El in Brooklyn. Looking further afield we see that there is a St. Albans station on the Montauk of the Long Island Railroad in Queens . Now St. Alban lived in Britain in the 3rd Century. How he ended up in Queens I do not know. X-Astorian reminded me of St James on the LIRR Port Jervis Line. Victor M recalled St Mary’s – East 143rd Street on the IRT Pelham Line Can anyone thing of some others? Larry, RedbirdR33 |

They still had those commemorative maps at the 86th St. station when I was in the city in October of 2017. Needless to say, I acquired a couple of copies. |
