42 St Shuttle observations and questions

Posted by gbs on Tue Dec 16 21:57:44 2025

I rode the shuttle for the first time in a long while. Both trains were 6 cars of R62As, all completely wrapped and customized for shuttle service: all of the center seats have been removed and replaced with new hand-holds on the walls and ceiling.

I forgot to look but I'm guessing that the cars are all coupled together and not linked.

Beyond the shuttle route, the train on shuttle track #1 can access only the downtown #6 track south of Grand Central, and the train on shuttle track #4 can access only the uptown #1 track north of Times Square.

Where do these trains go for service and car swapping?

Besides the twelve cars I saw, how many other customized shuttle cars are there? Where are they stored?

Aside from the interior changes visible to the passengers, have the cars been modified mechanically or any other way for shuttle service?

The cars are linked, not coupled. The fleet is 24 cars. 12 in service, 12 spares. All 24 cars are maintained at Livonia Yard. Nothing special mechanically.
