2003 – from The Book of Last Runs

The last train of IRT Redbirds ran in service today as a #7 Flushing Local from Times Square to Willets Point. The train ran as an extra making all local stops. The consist was (N) 9564-5, 9309, 9582-3, 9584-5, 9617-6, 9587-6. 9309 is an R-33 (World’s Fair) and the rest are R-36 (World’s Fair). When they were first delivered in 1964 they were painted blue and white and were known as Bluebirds.

It should be noted that this was thirty four years to the day that the last train of IRT Lo-V’s and Steinways ran on the 3rd Avenue El in The Bronx.

Among the dignitaries in attendance were: Larry, RedbirdR33
Mark Feinman
John S
Christopher Rivera
Bill Newkirk

Bill from Maspeth
Subwayman
Wakefied-241st Street
309
Terrapin Station
Lord Vadar
Northshore

Ed. Note: November 3 was a sad and poignant day for the IRT railfans.
In 1969 we said goodbye to the last of the cars built for the Interborough Rapid Transit Company. Thirty ones years late we attended the wake for the great Redbirds.

Addendum

Also on this date in 1954 Godilla walked out of Tokyo Bay and into cinematic history.
Japan has never been the same.
