Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Fri Oct 31 08:17:14 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for October 31 Happy Halloween 1925 – from The Book of Last Runs The BMT Fourth Avenue subway is extended from 86th Street to 95th Street, Brooklyn. 1956 – from The Book of Last Runs Service is discontinued on the last two streetcar lines in Brooklyn. The last car on the McDonald Avenue line was PCC 1042. It arrived at the 9th Avenue Depot at 5:20 AM. The last car on the Church Avenue line was PCC 1039. It arrived at the depot at 5:52 AM. Ed. Note: Trolley service on the Queensborough Bridge would continue until April 1957. This would be the last light rail line in New York State until 1984 when streetcars returned to Buffalo. This was indeed a sad day for Brooklyn. First they lost the trolleys and then the Dodgers. Brooklyn has never been the same. 1961 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operations for the Lehigh and New England Railroad, a bridge line that ran from Campbell Hall, New York to Nesque Honing, Pennsylvania. Although the railroad was still profitable its revenues were declining and its parent company, the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company decided to end operations before the railroad descended into bankruptcy. 1994 – from The Book of First Runs New Jersey Transit extends passenger service on the Morristown Line 8.8 miles from Netcong to Hackettstown. New stations are opened at Mount Olive and Hackettstown and are served by both Morristown and Boonton Lines trains. This is the first time there has been passenger service west of Netcong since 1966. 2014 – from The Book of Last Runs Seastreak discontinues service on the Rockaway Ferry. The last run was made by the M.V. ATHENA which was on loan from the Block Island Ferry. She arrived at Beach 108th Street at about 8:45 PM. Service had begun two years earlier in response to the damage to the subway line caused by Hurricane Sandy. The boats ran between Beach 108th Street and Pier 11 in Manhattan with a stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal. Ferry service to the Rockaways resumed on May 1, 2017 when NYC Ferry began operations. 2021 – from The Book of First Runs A test train of M-9 cars ran from Jamaica to Grand Central via the East Side Access Line through the 63rd Street Tunnel and down Park Avenue. The line between Harold Interlocking in Long Island City and Grand Central is officially known as the Grand Central Branch. Governor Kathy Hocul was onboard the train. |

Historically, this discontinuance was said to be the start of what some would call the "de-Brooklynization" of Brooklyn, followed in that order by:- the Dodgers moving to Los Angeles in 1958 (ironically, in their first few years in L.A., there were still "trolley dodgers" in that city, owing to what was left of the once-vast Pacific Electric streetcar network) - the last of the "trackless trolleys" being retired in 1960 - the final closure of Steeplechase Park at Coney Island in 1964 - the retirement of the BMT "Triplexes" in 1965 - the retirement of the BMT "AB Standards" and the closure of the Myrtle Avenue elevated line, both in 1969 |

I rode the trackless trolleys, either the B47 or B48, a few times when I was really little. What I remember is the kids grabbing the pole and riding on the outside of the bus. And by the time Steeplechase Park was closed it was a run down relic. I went once there too and it was old even to my 9 year old eyes. The rides were ancient. |
