Tuscarora Almanac for October 28

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Tue Oct 28 06:54:14 2025

Tuscarora Almanac for October 28

1960 – from The Book of Special Runs

A train called “The Titan Subway Football Special” departed from 169th Street-Jamaica at about 9:30 AM. It ran non-stop to 42nd Street-8th Avenue (lower level) where it picked up more fans. It proceeded south and revered on the track A-5 south of 34th Street. It then ran non-stop to the 155th Street Station. Passengers would then walk to the Polo Grounds were the New York Titans (now the Jets) played.

A second run was made on November 24 starting from 179th Street.

1983 – from The Book of Last Runs

This is the last day of operation for the former Pennsylvania Railroad GG-1's now running for New Jersey Transit. The final regular run was made by No.4879 in charge of Train No. 3323, a Penn Station to South Amboy run.

How did the train get from 169th St. (Jamaica line?) to 42nd St. lower level? This was before Chyrstie St. opened.

It was on the Queens Boulevard Line.

It stopped on the old lower level of 42nd Street (similar to the old Aqueduct Special) to pick up passengers, then went south of 34/8 on the express track where it would switch from downtown to uptown, then somewhere on the way to 155th switch to the uptown local track.

Coming back, it would do the exact reverse.

If this had been done post-Christie on the Jamaica line, it would have simply operated from 168 (now Jamaica Center) and through the Christie connection and then either after Broadway-Lafayette up the 8th Avenue line and on the local track to 155 or via 6th Avenue to 47-50 (switching after West 4 or 34 to the express track) and then via that to Columbus Circle and via the CPW local track.

It surprises me they never did that for Giants games when they were at Yankee Stadium to the best of my knowledge.

What cars would they have used for this Special?

They could run it express to 145th just like the D does now. No need to run it local on 8th Ave. 155th is on the Concourse line.

I believe they used the Arnines. I have seen pictures of the football special in the past.

Right. They could have run to 145 lower level and switched to the local between 125 and 145 as I believe the (D) actually does now when it goes local on the Concourse.

In those days the R-16 cars were assigned to the BMT Eastern Division. They mostly ran on the Jamaica line (today's J/Z) and sometimes appeared on the LL (Lousy Local). After Chrystie they got sent to other BMT and IND lines like the GG and EE.

True. After all the R1/9s were only 20-30 years old in 1960. Barely broken in by TA standards.

No. They go directly to the local track at 145th lower from the 135th express track. What I don't see though is how a B on the center track at 145th lower goes to the local track at 135th, but I know they do as I've rode it myself.

First it switches to the local track (lower level), then to the local track (upper level now at the same level):

Thanks. The track map I had in front of me didn't show those crossovers on the lower level.
