Tuscarora Train of the Week No 3

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Oct 6 09:15:52 2025

Tuscarora Train of the Week No. 3 >

New York City Transit Authority
IND Division
Rt. DD Grand Concourse – 8th Avenue – Culver Local
Time Period: December 1962

The DD Grand Concourse-8th Avenue-Culver ran for a little more than two weeks from December 7 to December 24, 1962. Service ran between 205th Street and Coney Island during the rush hours. Trains ran local via the IND Concourse and 8th Avenue lines to West 4th Street. The route than followed the Houston Street line and the Rutgers Street tunnel to Brooklyn and then over the Culver line to Coney Island. The trains were identified as “DD” 6th Avenue Local even though they never operated on Sixth Avenue.

There was a water main break at 18th Street and Sixth Avenue in the early hours of December 7, 1962. The flooding was extensive and lead to the closing of IND 6th Avenue line between 34th Street and West 4th Street. Several subway lines were affected and emergency services put into effect. “D” trains would continue to run between 205th Street and Coney Island but via the former BMT Culver Line in Brooklyn but would only run during the non-rush hours. The “DD” would run during rush hours. Both services would use the local tracks of the 8th Avenue line between 59th Street and West 4th Street.

“DD” trains ran with ten car consists of R-1/9’s. Church Avenue short turns carried Yellow-White markers will Coney Island trains carried Green-Yellow lights.

Normal service was restored in time for Christmas on December 24, 1962. This was the first and only time that a “DD’ train ever ran on the transit system.

They should have just run the CC all the way to Coney Island, since the only way to get there on the IND was via 8th Ave.

Probably, but they probably were not thinking that way at the time.

What actually ran that route was the CC. It was just mislabeled as a DD by what passed for TA management at the time!

I also would have run the D during rush hours only between 205th St. and 34th St.-6th Ave., with peak direction express operation in the Bronx.

Relative to my other post, it did actually run that way but like the DD it was also mislabeled by what passed for TA management.

And finally, I would have run the resurrected C during non-rush hours down 8th Ave. to Coney Island via Houston St.

The problem with the C as an 8th Ave Express to CI via Houston is that it has to be on the local track at W4th St.

It could have run express to 59th St and lcl toW 4th st. Actually as I mentioned in my other post the service that ran was a CC during the rush and a C during non rush, but was mislabeled as D and DD because the TA management, as good as it we like to think it may have been, couldn’t think intelligently.

There was a bulletin or something that described the temporary routes that I had to re-sort for it to make sense. It was in letter order rather than time order and it was hard to see which trains went where or when.
