Tuscarora Almanac for October 1 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Oct 1 15:34:37 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for October 11893 – from The Book of First Runs Brooklyn’s Fifth Avenue El is extended from 36th Street to 65th Street. 1911 – from The Book of First Runs The Pennsylvania Railroad and the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad open a new station called Manhattan Transfer. It is located in the Jersey Meadows at a point where the Jersey City Line to Exchange Place meets the new line to Pennsylvania station, Manhattan. Trains operating via the Hudson River Tunnel will change power here between steam and electric engines. The H&M will extend its service from Grove Street in Jersey City to this station allowing across platform transfer between H&M and PRR trains. Summit Avenue (Journal Square) station will not open until April 4, 1912. This station was only used for the transfer of passenger from one railroad to the other. It was not accessible from the outside. 1934 – from The Book of Service Changes Due to declining ridership off peak 5th Avenue El trains are reduced to a single car. This car is coupled to Culver El trains at 36th Street. 1935 – from The Book of First Runs The Triangle Bus Corporation begins operation of the M-40 East River and Hudson River Line. The line runs from Houston Street on the East River to Pier A at Battery Park. Service ends in July, 1940 due to a strike. 1936 – from The Book of First Runs The Brooklyn & Queens Transit Corporation begins operation of the first PCC cars on the Smith Street - Coney Island Line. 1962 – from The Book of First Runs The first train of R-Types is placed into service on the No.4 Lexington Avenue-Jerome Avenue Line. 1983 – from The Book of First Runs On or about this date the New York City Transit Authority receives the first locomotives built under the R-77 contract. The order consists of twenty diesel-electric engines (R-77) and ten electric engines (R-77 E). One more diesel electric was built and sold to the Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority. All were built by the General Electric Company. The R-77’s are numbered as L-883 through L-902, the R-77 E’s as OEL-01 through OEL-10. The Atlanta unit is 1001. 1990 – from The Book of First Runs Prior to the opening of the new Harrison Maintenance Facility PATH borrowed TA Engine No. 64 to haul the PA cars around the facility. No. 64 must have enjoyed her visit to Jersey because she was still there in December. No. 64 was built by General Electric Transportation Systems in 1975 as part of the R-47 contract. |

Originally, IRT “10 car” platforms could not berth a full 10 car train, the end doors of the end cars extending past the platform ends. The west side lined solved that problem by running 9 car trains of R types which ridership allowed. East side ridership was so heavy, that full 10 car trains had to be operated on the express lines so assignment of 10 car trains of R types to the east side lines had to wait until the platforms on Lex were lengthened to accommodate full 10 car trains. |

The reason that with Hi-V and Lo-V cars the platform did not have to be long enough to platform the full 10 cars was that the end doors of the end cars of trains were locked out of use because they provided access to the motorman's cab. |

That wasn’t necessarily the only reason that the end doors did not open. In fact Grand Central/Lex was long enough to berth a full 10 car train and during rush hours, the M/M would close the cab door over the controls, open the side door and let passengers enter and exit through it. |

That station likely was built to begin with for full 10-car trains and I'm sure the upper levels of 59th and 86th if not already were extended for full 10-car trains as were others as needed. |

That wasn’t the reason that the “battleship” Hi-Vs were placed at the ends of the trains. Since they lacked MUDC they couldn’t function in any other place in the train except at the head end without needing extra C/Rs to operate the doors. On rare occasions even when most of the Hi-Vs had MUDC, the 137th St and Lenox lcls would occasionally operate a train of all manual door cars and extra 2nd position C/Rs were used to operate the doors. |

If I remember correctly Grand Central used to employ platform conductors during rush hour to make sure that trains weren't delayed by people holding doors open. |

Yet the BMT continued to keep the 5th Ave El running for over twenty years, until the City takeover, in 1940. It should have have been torn down after the Montague tunnel was connected to the Chambers St station in 1931. As soon as it opened, all 5th Ave els turned at Sands St. Why they kept it running, after 1931, is a mystery to me. |

I know that the Kings County Elevated had a perpetual franchise, so it took years of talks to reach a purchase price for the Fulton St El. As far as I know, the 5th Ave el did not have one, so the City could have condemned it and paid an agreed price. In addition, the the scrap metal would have defrayed some of the cost. |

The center doors on the battleship Hi-Vs were not really remote controlled. The center door handles on those cars operated an air valve that opened and closed the center doors. The first Lo-Vs had a similar set up with 2 handles, one operated the end vestibule doors and the other operated the center doors. |

I remember this from my trips from Flushing to and from Stuyvesant High School in the late 1960s. Grand Central was sometimes a problem in boarding a southbound 4 or 5 train to reach 14th St-Union Square. I often used other routes to avoid this like the 6 local or going to Times Square to take a BMT Express train or getting on a BMT train across the platform at Queensboro Plaza. All of these alternates cost some additional travel time. |
