Tuscarora Almanac for September 24 |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Sep 24 03:53:22 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for September 24 1939 – from The Book of First and Last Runs The Hudson & Manhattan Railroad closes the 28th Street Station in Manhattan. On the same day the new terminal called "33rd Street" opens for service. It is actually located at 32nd Street and replaces the original 33rd Street Terminal which was demolished during the construction of the IND 6th Avenue Subway. 1949 – from The Book of Last Runs Lehigh Valley Transit discontinues service over the Philadelphia & Western Railway between Norristown and Upper Darby, Pennsylvania. Service between Allentown and Norristown will continue for two more years. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

The "new" H&M terminus was built simultaneous to the IND's Sixth Avenue line. As a result, H&M platform specs were adapted to suit what the Transit Commission, in the 1920's, specified for IRT and BMT platforms. In the H&M's case, "temporary" platform edge to track center was 4' 7-1/2", so the permanent edge was made for that station at 4' 11. (By contrast, the temporary and permanent edges on the IRT were specified at 4' 8-1/4" and 4' 11-3/4", and on the BMT - and later, IND - 5' 2" and 5' 5-1/2".) |

I believe the part between Norristown and Upper Darby is todays Norristown High Speed Line (aka Route 100). That is correct. Lehigh Valley trains ran over the tracks of the Philadelphia & Western Railroad to reach Upper Darby. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
