My memory could be faulty, but before the Bway-7th Avenue expresses were eliminated, there was a time when the northbound thru expresses used the center track until 145 Street. There were two catches: 137th Street locals could not use the center track for reversal, so they reversed at Dyckman; and often a train running ahead of the through express would cut in front of the through express, defeating the purpose of the through express. It was 2/6/1959 when all Van Cortlandt Park trains became locals. That solution has now worked for 66 years. |

They tried it twice and each time found that it was not practicable. Part 3 Rt. 1 Broadway Thru-Express November 16, 1906 to January 3, 1911 all expresses use the center track between 137th Street and 100th Street, Monday through Saturday rush hours in direction of traffic. January 14, 1955 Alternate trains run as thru-express between 137th Street and 96th Street. Last Day June 28, 1956. Larry, RedbirdR33 Note: This does not refer to the post 1959 operations of trains running express on the local track. |

The only way they could realistically run the (1) as a peak direction express now would be to convert 125th Street to a two-island platform station where 125 is an express stop that also could be used as a new short-turn terminal. |

What's key also is which stations are being skipped. The "express" stations aren't always the stations where the people are. It's nobody's fault - there's no way for the original designers to know exactly where the crowds will be 100+ years later. Even when the 1/9 skip-stop was happening, all trains still made all stops south of 137th. |

Never understood why using the center track between 137 or 145, and 96, would not work. If you timed an express to leave 137 a minute or so after a local, it would reach 96 well before the local, which has to make 4 station stops. |

The standard when I was in scheduling was 30 seconds for every stop. since there are 4 stops between 137th St and 96th St that would mean a 2 min difference between local trains and trains on the express tk. the preferred clearance between trains on the same track is 2 min although 90 seconds is allowed if absolutely necessary. With an express 2 min behind a local, that would make the lcl and exp arrive at the respective merge points at the same time. Even allowing anexp 1 1/2 min behind the local that would make the exp arrive at the merge point 1/2 min ahead of the lcl, too close for accepted standards. |
