Staten Island Railway Survey - One Week Later

Posted by W.B. on Mon Sep 22 03:40:47 2025

Yesterday, I took a trip to Staten Island to survey the situation on SIR. Here's what I found:
- At St. George, wall-to-wall R-211S's. I took one such consist, terminating at Jefferson Avenue (there was no service between there and Huguenot, and I wasn't about to take the free transfer to and from). It was (T) 170-171-172-173-174 (S). ("T" is Tottenville, "S" St. George.) Only one lone R-44 set was at St. George, at the very (west) end of the terminal: 456 on the end of the platform as headed to Tottenville, 426 on the end in the direction of St. George. There were eight other sets as follows, same orientation: 145-146-147-148-149; 159-158-157-156-155; 130-131-132-133-134; 150-151-152-153-154; 139-138-137-136-135; 100-101-102-103-104; 165-166-167-168-169; and 124-123-122-121-120.
- In the stretch between Tompkinsville and Stapleton stations, on tracks near to Bay Street, were three sets of R-44's - 394-389-415-396; 458-392-425-430; and 406-418-391-436 - defaced with graffiti on the sides, something that never happened in all their years of service - a sure sign that these cars are headed for "the torch."
- At Clifton yards, I saw a lone R-44 - 403 - side-by-side with an R-32 relabeled LT001; another R-44 set of 428-397-416-446 was there along with R-211S 105-106-107-108-109 and another lone R-32 behind it, plus an LIRR locomotive.

While there did you notice if the track bed is welded rail on cement ties?
I don't recall if the ROW was ever welded and had the old ties removed.

Thank you

From what I could tell, their ties are still wooden. They may've had new rail welded on, the contours seem more consistent with 115 lb. RE rail than 100 lb. ARA-B.

The SIRT purchased some Metro North locomotives to replace the old alcos.

Those aren't Metro North locomotives. They were newly built using Metro North colors.

I thought they were extras that the MTA added on to a MN order specifically to go to SIR. I could be wrong.

When I look at those locos, I can't help imagining them hauling Shoreliners on the SIR, perhaps on a rebuilt North Shore line that the MTA somehow didn't want to re-electrify.
