952 Standards |
|
Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Sat Sep 20 08:51:00 2025 "The Elevated Railways of Brooklyn and the BMT Subway", Volume 3 has just been published. This book is authored by Mr. Eric Oszustowicz and is a goldmine of information on the BMT. There is a notation on page 439 that December 18, 1918 Standards 2208 and 2274 were damaged beyond repair in an accident north of Chambers Street Station. Two new car bodies were built by ACF which was then building the 2500 series cars with the same car numbers to replace these two cars . The author notes that this means the 952 not 950 Standards were built. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Not that I know much about the IRT, but several R17's had very short lives. As for the B Division, the D Types did well, just one set (1 renumbering) lost to a collision. And that was like 30 years into their lives. As for SMEES, I think the R27/30's had it rough as 4 were lost in the Met fire and 1 on the Astoria line. The 32's had quite a few wrecks before they were GOH'ed. They lost 4 R38's at a young age. They lost slants 4420/21 at a young age, R42's were lost too, especially 4680/81 lost by the time I got hired in 1979. Several others lost early like 4714/15 and 4766/67. The R44's had many losses at a young age whereas just 2 R46's pre GOH were lost at 179 lower level when a motorman had a fatal heart attack before he took out the bumper block and crashed into a wall. The luckiest ones are the R68/68A's. None lost at all but 2755 almost was when it was sideswiped by a work train in CIYD before it was released for service. This is all from memory. Where they Downward modified to R/10's or upward modified to R/16 specs? |
