Are downward escalators pointless?

Posted by shiznit1987 on Mon Jul 14 10:05:17 2025

So Roosevelt Ave has recently finished it's renovation of the escalator bays between the West end of the E/F/M/R platforms and the 7. The thought occurred to me that instead of three escalator bays, why not save on maintenance and have two permanently upward escalators and a wider staircase for those going down. I can see this having a pair of advantages in that it will make evacuation much easier having wider stairs as well as less escalators requiring less maintenance.

Systemwide, do you find the idea of downward escalators pointless?

Downward escalators are far from pointless. Many people don't need a wheel chair but have great difficulty with stairs, both up and down. And even fully healthy people can walk down the escalator and therefore save time.

Not pointless if you have knee issues.

I initially thought the OP was a Peter Rosa Production because of the seeming randomness of the subject. Anyway, I agree with your assessment although the people with "great difficulty" might also have some difficulty getting on and/or off the escalator depending on the speed. Hopefully, the elevator(s) will be in working condition.

Also, people are often carrying a lot of stuff and it actually can be tougher to go down stairs than up.

Yep. For some people it's actually tougher to walk DOWN than UP stairs.

Not if you have physical issues. Going down stairs with, say, a wheel-tote full of groceries is a long dragging process, and will break eggs.

Being 74 going on 75, I know multiple people who are still agile enough to get on and off an escalator, but whose knees protest tremendously with every step, whether down or up.

Not when my knees stiffen up on rainy days, heck no.

I'm sure stairs aren't fun to fall down.

But I vote for the european style/ikea downward moving sidewalk ramp. Make it as steep as you want.
