2007 – from The Book of Last Runs

The Staten Island ferryboat THE GOV.HERBERT H LEHMAN ended forty two years of service today with the 10:30 PM departure from Whitehall Street.

The vessel was tied up at a shipyard on the Kill Van Kull while work was underway to convert her to a restaurant. The plans never came to fruition though and she was subsequently towed to the Steelways Shipyard in Newburgh, New York and was scrapped.

Mr. Stephen Bauman added the following:

The Lehman's life was probably extended a couple months because both the Marchi (JJM) and Molinari (GVM) broke down on May 6th. It was also the biggest year for the SI ferry - 25K returning Five Boro Bike Tour riders.

4 boat operation was implemented with the JFK and Spirit of America (SOA), in addition to the abovementioned boats. The Newhouse was the backup and placed in service after the first breakdown. The Lehman was recalled out from mothballs after the second breakdown. It had not been used for one month. You should have seen the smoke belching from its stack, when it was started.

The Lehman also had a problem. Its PA system failed. It was fixed and the HHL resumed service.
