Posted by W.B. on Thu Jun 26 16:51:18 2025 June 26, 1933 - The Book of First and Last Runs Manhattan, New York Second Avenue Railroad Corporation East Side Omnibus Corporation Buses replace streetcars on the First Avenue and Second Avenue lines. The trolleys had been run by the Second Avenue Railroad (in the case of the First Avenue line, only running between 59th and 125th Streets). Bus service will be operated by East Side Omnibus as Routes M-13 - First Avenue-Allen Street-South Ferry and M-15 - Second Avenue-Worth Street, respectively. These routes are among five new bus lines inaugurated on this date by East Side Omnibus, the others being: - M-11 - York Avenue-57th Street (today's M31) - M-12 - York Avenue-86th Street (discontinued around 1939; it may have been folded into another branch of New York City Omnibus' Route 18 - 86th Street Crosstown soon afterwards) - M-14 - First Avenue-Astor Place (terminated south at Astor Place and Broadway, although some sources listed this as a shuttle running between East 10th Street-First Avenue and Astor Place; likewise discontinued c. 1939) (Sources: "Bus Lines Ready to Open," The New York Times, June 25, 1933; "Pageant Starts New Bus System," The New York Times, June 27, 1933; "New York's East Side Lines Start Service," Bus Transportation, [month and/or week unknown] 1933; "Route Map of New York City Omnibus Corporation," issued 1939.)

Posted by Wallyhorse* on Thu Jun 26 20:57:35 2025, in response to W.B.'s Rail Almanac for June 26th, posted by W.B. on Thu Jun 26 16:51:18 2025.* As I grew up on the upper east side, I can note the M-11 (now M-31 that it actually has been longer) when I was growing up originally ended on 2nd and 61st street in the early 1970's, then extended to Lexington Avenue and 58th-59th Streets (going across 61st Street south/westbound and 57th Street east/northbound where it ended) until 1994 or so when it was moved to 57th Street both ways and went almost all the way across 57th to 11th Avenue and 54th Street, where it has been terminating southbound ever since. The northbound terminal has always been 92nd Street and York Avenue (northernmost block of York Avenue, going west at 91st to 1st Avenue and then east to 92nd to terminate.
