Catskill Moutain Railroad Trip Report

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed Jun 25 12:26:18 2025

Tuscarora Dispatch No. 43

Catskill Mountain Railroad – June 15, 2025

The Catskill Mountain Railroad operates in Kingston, New York over the tracks of the former Ulster & Delaware Railroad. The current operation is between Westbrook Plaza (MP 3.7) and Stony Hollow (MP8.6). The train consist varies throughout the season. This Sunday there were four flat cars, two former LIRR coaches and an N-5 Caboose. Motive power was provided by ALCO RS-1 No. 401.

Once the train departs it passes through Westbrook Plaza and crosses Washington Avenue at grade. It then passes under the New York State Thruway and goes by the main garage for Adirondack Trailways. It then crosses over Esopus Creek and runs through farmland until it reaches Rt. 209. The crossing here is protected by automatic gates. After we pass Hurley Mountain Road the train begins to climb up Hurley Mountain. We pass the Pumpkin Patch which is always busy on October. Next up is the North Pole Village, an important stop for the Polar Express. Finally we reach the end of operable track at Stony Hollow.

Last year the railroad had over 60, 000 riders. Slightly more than half were for the very popular Polar Express trains. The success of the line has been a major boom to the tourism and hospitality business in Kingston. Also if you ride the train on Sundays you will get a free ice cream cone.

I was doing business at the Kingston (Westbrook) Plaza this past Saturday and saw that train in layup. I often walk over just to look it over but have never ridden it. I also cross those tracks over 209 a mile or so from Hurley Mountain Road every now and then. By the way, were the banjo players doing their thing onboard?

I need to get over to the Trolley Museum of New York and the Hudson River Maritime Museum which are both in Kingston. That I have not done so is unacceptable inexcusable unforgivable all of those things.
