New turnstiles now in use at Canarsie L train station to stop fare skipping

New turnstiles now in use at Canarsie L train station to stop fare skipping

There had not been a barrier because the B42 bus route was intended to be part of the subway system, as it replaced the outer end of the Canarsie route. The bus boarding area had been all fenced, with buses having to use controlled gates to enter, to prevent (or at least minimize) fare evasion. However, when I looked at Google street views, it seems that sometime between 2018 and 2021, the bus gates were removed. If that is true (I have not been there for years) then it is no wonder that the fare is being evaded. Why would those gates not have been retained? In sum, the NYCTA's actions here appear to be step backwards.

Imagine if MTA management operated the subway in Toronto: all the stations would be turned into prisons to prevent direct transfers between subway trains and surface routes.

Does the change use up the normal transfer or is it truly free and one can make an additional transfer later on?

Being so NY minded, when I first arrived at Toronto and took the airport-bus to the subway and found myself on the subway platform and able to board without having passed any fare gates, I was genuinely worried that I had inadvertently skipped the fare! Then finally I realized. . .oh, it's meant to be this way!

Big deal they aren't paying for the bus anyway in most cases. SBS for sure they aren't paying.

Those gates that let the bus in were broken for decades. Love to see a picture when the trollies ran.

Maybe the correct policy response is to extend the L back to Canarsie Pier.

You sure that it does? The left loves covering their "mistakes" up after all and then confessing later when the public's attention is focused on something else.

There may be much more to it than just that. In LA, tougher fare gates are being installed to keep troublesome people and criminals out of the system. LA found that 95% of crime was committed by riders that didn’t pay their fare. So for us they’re much more of a safety feature than a revenue generator although they’re that as well.

As far as revenue goes, in the first two stations where tougher gates have replaced PATH-style turnstiles paid entries have increased by 107% and 248%.

“High trust” is correlated with low crime. That’s part of the trust right there.

Or like something in that song "M.T.A." that The Kingston Trio recorded in 1959, with poor old Charlie . . .

I don’t know what it is like now, but in the 1970s on the Green line once the trolley left the subway an extra 10 cents was required of exiting passengers. I often wondered what would happen if an exiting passengers failed to pay and just walked or ran down the street away from the trolley. Would the M/M abandon the car and run down the block after the fare beat or just close up and move on?

They might also have enforcement. The Carnasie system seemed to work ok until they made the bus entrances more hospitable to walk-throughs and also the police went on an informal strike.
