Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Mon Apr 14 14:13:45 2025 Tuscarora Almanac for April 14 1948 from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day for streetcar service in Wheeling, West Virginia. 1975 – from The Book of Last Runs The practice of “E” trains using the lower level platform at 42nd Street-8th Avenue during the rush hours was discontinued at the PM rush on this date. Route "S" Aqueduct Specials continued to use the lower level platform until 1981 when that service was discontinued. 1990 – from The Book of Last Runs This is the last day of operation of the JFK Express. The last train left from 21 Street-Queensbridge at 11:58PM, April 14 and was scheduled to depart from Howard Beach-JFK Airport at 12:56 AM, April 15. The consist was a four car train of R-44’s (N) 286-123-233-146. The JFK Express began on September 23, 1978. It was widely advertised as "The Train to the Plane". In reality it was "The Train to the Bus to the Plane". When trains arrived at Howard Beach the JFK Express Shuttle Bus (Loops A and B) was waiting to take passengers to the airport. At first the service was protected by a dedicated group of R-46's. As time went other equipment was used including R-38's and R-44's. Source: New York Division Bulletin /May, 1990 Tuscarora Dispatch No. 28 – Equipment Used on the JFK Express The JFK Express was based out of Jamaica Yard. It began operating on September 23, 1978 using a dedicated fleet of R-46's (1201-1242). The crackling of the HPT-2 truck frames came to the fore in 1980-81 reducing the availability of the R-46's. Substitute equipment was used an observed as follows; 6/4/80 - R-44 6/12/80 - R-38 6/26/80 - R-44 7/80 - R-42 7/17/80 - R-38 12/11/80 - R-32 12/12/80 mixed R-32 / R-38 1/81 - R-38 2/13/81 - R-10 and R-40 (two four car trains) 4/15/81 R-40 and R-44 By March of 1982 the HPT-2 trucks were replaced and the R-46 were back. This lasted until December 11, 1998 when the JFK Express fleet was assigned to Pitkin Yard. 36 R-44's were then assigned and remained until April 14, 1990 when the service was discontinued. Most of this information comes from a serialized set of article titled :A History of the A Train" published in the NYD Bulletin and written by Mr. George Chiasson. The March 1981 Bulletin also contains information about the use of the R-10's. 2003 – from The Book of Last Runs The last train of mainline R-33 Redbirds ran today on the #4 Lexington Avenue Express. The consist was (S) 9232-3, 9302-3, 9108-9, 9244-5 and 9248-9. N.B. The R-33 World's Fair Redbirds (the ones with the picture windows) will continue to run on the Flushing Line for several more months. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

JFK has 6 terminals, more or less, plus Federal Circle and long term parking. You wanted to extend a subway that for much of the day operates at a frequency of only 4 trains per hour and make THAT an airport circulator with 8 separate stops? |

Possible correction for Jackson Park:JFK Airtrain serves 7 "circulator" stations without fare. The $8.50 fare is charged only at Howard Beach and Jamaica, both boarding and alighting passengers. A time-consuming way to game the system is to use the Lefferts Blvd Air Train station (free) and then pay bus fare on the Q10, B15, or Q3. |

Four trains per hour is a lot, even during the day (one train every 15 minutes). And who's to say it couldn't be shared with local trains?? or even have the LIRR extension built as the proper express format? (as a more comfortable option that is.)Your JFK Airtrain cost almost $2 billion (nominal cost) for a paltry 8.1 miles. Almost $250 million per mile. I think it's safe to say you hate trains. |

The Port Authority made the airlines pay for the circulator. They didn't have the legal authority to make them pay for the access to transit stations.The alternative would not have been free access to the circulator from the A train. The alternative would have been NO access to the circulator from the A train. |

How frequently do you think airport express buses run?Airport express buses serve a different (and much smaller) clientele from airport circulators. The JFK circulator serves people renting cars, changing planes between terminals, using long term parking, and staying at local hotels. A far bigger market than those who want to travel to Brooklyn or Manhattan and are willing to consider an alternative to a taxi (which is what the A train serves). |

The rules about who should pay for the circulator were heavily lobbied at the time which was concurrent with similar stupidities at SFO w/BART. The logical, airline passenger friendly design out here would havebeen a single BART/Circulator/Caltrain transfer station. BART which at the time still was hoping to replace Caltrain from SFO to San Jose got a referendum passed within SF requiring BART to enter the SFO terminal complex. . The net result is that the circulator which could have beenn on the same level as a better designed BART station is a flight above.. Yes there are escalators,elevators, but the whole routing isdumb. |
