It's amazing how many steps are required by the crew to make it work.

I guess it illustrates one NYCT shortcoming.

The GTFS schedule could reference all that information from a single trip id entry and current calendar date. The GTFS schedule could be downloaded at the terminal at the beginning of the day. All the crew would have to do would be to enter the trip id.

Working off the GTFS could provide an additional benefit. It could tell the crew whether the train was on, ahead or behind schedule and by how much all through the trip. It would be a cheap way of providing Automatic Train Supervision (ATS).

I've heard that cooperation between the various entities is somewhere between rare and non-existent. Those responsible for implementing the various customer related enhancements like countdown clocks could not interface directly with existing system hardware. Having to enter all the nitty-gritty trip information for the AAS would appear to fit that description. Moreover, using the AAS to provide ATS to influence operations would be viewed as anarchism.
