Posted by Orange Blossom Special on Mon Sep 9 16:12:07 2024 I wonder why everything is "light" rail instead of just building real rapid transit? |

Good question, especially since many light rail vehicles like those in St Louis and LA are the same size and dimensions of CTA “heavy rail” rapid transit equipment. |

I suspect that one reason is that "light" rail sounds "green." It also sounds friendlier and less intrusive and might mobilize less NIMBYism. |

The rebranding way preceeded "green" and you would be amazed how many NIMBYs oppose transit. As a truly disgusting puiece of NYS history, when Buiffalo built a route, the shopping mall at the far end refused to let the system enter the mall. The net result one morning was amall worker being killed as she tried to cross a wide street to get to her job. |
