When I became a train dispatcher in 1970, on the header of the train register sheets where there was a place for “line” I would insert the BMT name instead of the letter. When I worked Sundays at Stl West End I would enter “West End” instead of “B." |

This should be taught in Kindergarten. Telling people an email address over the phone is a chore because the Romans were too lazy to keep proper names for the letters of the alphabet. |

No, the problem is the lack of standard sounds assigned to the letters of the so-called Latin alphabet. Think about chevrolet, church, challah, and loch. or how "fish" could be spelled "ghoti" as those letters are sounded in enough, women, and fiction. Not as bizarre as some French spellings, but certainly not following any consistent rules. The most commonly used verbs in many languages are the most irregular--think to be, to have, to go, in English, French, or Spanish as well as Latin. |

Less often needed, but sometimes even the numbers could use more distinct sounds. "Tree, fow-er, fife, niner" for 3, 4, 5, and 9 respectively. Usually it's not a problem on modern phones if the person giving the phone number takes their time and enunciates, but I sure wouldn't mind people knowing that vocabulary either, especially for people who tend to rush (most annoying when they take forever to say what they have to say in the voicemail and then warp-speed their phone number at the end). |

The way I describe it, English follows certain rules, until it doesn't. Even rules that I learned as a child no longer apply (e.g., how many "L"s are in the past tense of "LABEL"?). I know people will make the excuse that American English is a living language, etc., etc., but that doesn't mean the rules shouldn't be followed. Not doing so makes the language a mess.German, on the other hand, is much more consistent in pronunciation and spelling, even with the really huge words and the irregular conjugation of commonly used verbs you mentioned. |

The most commonly used verbs in many languages are the most irregular--think to be, to have, to go, in English, French, or Spanish as well as Latin.Does anyone know why this is? Why does it seem to be general across languages (or at least Western ones) to make the most basic verbs the most confusing? |

I will suggest it relates to the semi-literacy of the mass of speakers. If you barely can read or write (think of countries where voters tick boxes by emblems) they will not even know a "correct" spelling thu all they can go by is the sounds of the words as taught by adults in their familyand community. |
