Renovations to Chambers and 190th Street

While chat was down, this story got a lot of media coverage.

Chambers on the J is has been in a state of deterioration for so long it's hard to imagine it any other way.

Thanks for sharing the link.

So does that mean they're going to tear up the wall along the northbound track, which they installed recently? It's going to be interesting what they will do with the wall on the southbound side - the Lex lines are right behind it. I'll miss those '60s tiles though - say what you want about how they look, they're pretty durable.

Lastly, where are people going to urinate now? :-)

I would think that station is old enough that there were bathrooms when it was first built.

Hopefully they will release plans and proposals before work begins.

It would be cool to allow for the IRT and BMT to see each other.

IAWTP. It would also be a little funny if the see-through wall said "Brooklyn Bridge" on one side and "Chambers St" on the other.

I would love to see them restore as much of that platform as might be left back there. Not sure how much of the space the IRT wall took, as you can still see elements of the platform (such as columns) sticking out of the new wall. The IRT station is also actually higher than the BMT. If nothing else, put up a new wall (as far back as you can) in the old tile style of the rest of the station.

Since at least some of that space is occupied by the stairs and north end passageway between the two stations, I would make the passageway level with the platform and open it up, restoring at least that much of it so that you would actually be using that small piece of the platform when transferring; like what they did with the middle platform at 59th St.

I would finish off the station by hanging huge pendant dome lights in all that air space!

Chambers St. is going to need a renovation of Ellis Island proportions.

This is something that still may not happen-- I'll believe it when I read that the contracts have been awarded. The MTA has a sordid history of diverting budgeted money for other purposes, such as cost overruns on East Side Access or the Second Avenue Subway.

Most likely, what will happen is that the outside platform on the Jamaica bound side will be completely enclosed in a new false wall and the same will be done to the Broad St bound side and both walls will be tiled with historically appropriate mosaics as was done at Fulton and Broad Sts. If needed, the sealed up Jamaica bound outside platform can be converted for office space for other TA departments.

Since Chambers St is adjacent to City Hall and directly beneath the Municipal Bldg, it may receive a push from the city administration despite the MTA’s pseudo independence from direct city oversight.
