Nos. 1, 4 and 7 trains as well as the 3rd Avenue Local and the 42nd Street Shuttle were not affected by the changes.
After the service changes were implemented the following was in effect.
No. 2 trains would run between East 241th Street and New Lots Avenue at all times.
No. 3 trains would run as before except that the Brooklyn terminal was now Flatbush Avenue.
No. 5 Lexington Avenue Express trains would now terminate at Dyre Avenue from 6 AM to 8 PM seven days a week and at East 180th Street M-F 6 AM to 9 PM and S-S 6 AM to 12 midnight. Saturday morning service to Brooklyn was eliminated with all weekend trains running to South Ferry.

1983 – from The Book of First Runs

Port Jervis Line trains are re-routed from the former Erie Railroad Mainline to the Graham Branch between Harriman and Middletown, New York.
New stations at Middletown and Harriman replaced the old stations on the mainline. New stations were opened at Salisbury Mills and Campbell Hall. The stations at Monroe, Chester and Goshen were closed.

Chris. I ride the PJL fairly often. The Harriman Station seems to be well located. (Though another one at Woodbury Commons would generate a lot of traffic on the weekends). The Campbell Hall Station is in the middle of a cow pasture (literally). I've never been able to find it.

Middletown Station is actually about two miles west of Middletown itself. But where else would you be able to put the parking lot?

I like riding the Port Jervis Line. Even in the rush hours you can always get a seat and no one seems to be in a great hurry. This is in sharp contrast to the MN lines east of the Hudson.

Why did they even do it? Following NY 17 from Harriman to Middletown seems so much more sensible.

But it eliminated service to Monroe, Chester and Goshen.

I only live a few miles from the Chester station. If I wanna take a train now I gotta drive all the way to Woodbury.

I believe the original ROW was very winding and included slow street-running through Monroe.

Makes sense. The Graham Line was built as a straighter, flatter route for freight.

Not Monroe ... Goshen. Monroe has one bridge crossing over Mapes Place. Main Street was broken up by the tracks and didn't cross them. NY 208 had an overpass over the tracks, still in use.

Goshen had several street crossings. Some of them are all in a parking lot now, while the others cross active roadways, such as NY 207. They were fairly close together, so I can imagine that an 8 car train stopping for passengers would block several streets at once.

The route isn't very winding at all, at least that's my opinion.

I do agree that this line would be so much more useful as a train line today, but it is now a great bike trail, extending from Harriman to Middletown (NY), but broken up by about 1/2 mile of street riding in ... Goshen.
