Question about fire at Metropolitan/Middle Village 1976

Posted by LuchAAA on Thu Nov 30 01:31:09 2023

In 1976 a fire damaged the wooden platform and some R27/30 cars at Metropolitan Ave on the M train.

I remember the wooden platform being repaired then replaced with concrete about 5 years later.

Others say it was immediately replaced with concrete.

Was the cause ever determined?

It was temporarily replaced with a wooden platform. The concrete platform and brick station house dates to around 1980.

I don't know what caused the fire, but here's the aftermath (June 16, 1976)

Maybe the photos on nycsubway.org are labeled 1976?

Impossible. Fire can't melt steel. All of the 9/11 truthers who support "palestine" tell me so.

I think you're right.

I remember when Metropolitan was closed and a shuttle bus used.

"Fire can't melt steel."

Correct, but it can weaken it to the point where it loses something called "structural integrity" aka strength.

I was in Brooklyn then (recently back from 3 years living in Illinois), wonder why I didn't hear about this (I didn't watch news on TV back then, but I usually read the Daily News, so I should have seen an article)

I visited Metropolitan Av that fall (in my quest to cover the entire system), station had been repaired by then.

I seem to recall that in the spring of 1967 just before I went to the eastern as a Tw/M, something similar happened at Rockaway Pky Canarsie but by the time I pocked up my tower job the platform had been replaced with a concrete one.

I used those wooden platforms going to High School 1963-1966 at Christ the King. It was all Standards and Q-cars. The school building wasn’t finished yet when we started in Sept. 1962, so we had to travel to Mater Christi in Astoria for the first year. What a trip for a 13 year old!

CTK was built as a scholarship school, but opened with tuition.

The land was a popular baseball field.

My mother moved from Eldert in lower Ridgewood to Himrod at Cypress. She ended up going to Grover Cleveland instead.

Damn.
One hell of a fire.
Hot enough to burn up part of the station, burn up the train enough to make the frame buckle/twist/warp out of shape.

Geez.

I remember railfanning Myrtle to ride the Multis in their last days when the ball field was still there and later when CTK was being built. My father is buried in Lutheran Cemetery and at the Funeral in 1958, my mother commented that he was buried in a good place since he liked trains and baseball and he was close to both.
