Subway Flooding

Posted by TransitChuckG on Sat Sep 30 09:25:28 2023

From an anonymous employee.

Here are the steps needed tor resume service after the water is pumped out via pump trains or mobile pumps at street level

1. Mobile wash removes mud from platforms stairs, escalators/elevator
cabs etc.
2. All signals and switches need to be opened , cleaned, and dried and
tested
3. E And E ,[escalator and elevator] dries, removes mud and tests all
moving parts on escalators and elevators and their machinery rooms
and under the escalators
4. All electric and communication equipment rooms and panels are dried,
mud removed and tested.
5. Some can be done simultaneously

For the tunnels.

That doesn't stop water coming down the stairs if the street drains are backed up (or thru the vents in the sidewalks).

For the tubes under the water crossings. They also built up the grates on Queens Blvd with those bench-looking things.

The debris had been stored in the tunnels. The flood waters moved them. They did not migrate from the street.

From the referenced article:

The MTA watchdog credited the agency for purchasing the devices as part of improving flood preparedness. But the inspector general’s office recommended the MTA better maintain the new equipment and refine training on how to deploy the gear.

Some sourced told me that some equipment was designed to be activated by remote control. The MTA cut corners by not supplying the communications line required for remote control. Their strategy was to send personnel to the sites to activate the equipment.

Same source told me that some of the emergency closures were designed with single large, expensive metal plates to block water intrusion. The MTA changed the design to use two smaller plates to cover the same area. Water would intrude through the seam, where the two plates met.

Did original R/1's come with wind shield wipers?

What about IRT and BRT/BMT cars?

When were wipers put on R1/9 units?

How frequently do wipers get replaced?

Is wind shield cleaner by operator optional?

Were original wipers hand operated?

Are wipers now powered and when were they powered?

How frequently do you change yours? Often, or as needed?

The original R1s did not come with windshield wipers.

Reason - with the exception of the Smith-Ninth St and 4 Av stations the entire system was underground. No real need for wipers in that case .

IIRC - all wipers were hand operated until the R38s ( or was it the R32s)

There is a wiper on the SOAC car in the picture.

I did not find any photos.
