Listed below are the affected lines with their former railroad Discontinued on Friday, September 30, 1966 Northern Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Hoboken and Sparkill, NY. The following stations are closed; Susquehanna Transfer, Ridgefield, Palisades Park, Leonia, Englewood, Hudson Avenue / Englewood, Tenafly, Cresskill, Demarest, Closter, Norwood, Northvale in New Jersey and Sparkill in New York. Greenwood Lake Division -x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Mountain View and Wanaque, NJ. The following stations are closed; Wayne, Pequannock, Pompton Plains, Pompton - Riverdale, Haskell and Wanaque - Midvale. Caldwell Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Great Notch and Essex Fells, NJ. The following stations are closed; Cedar Grove, Verona, Caldwell and Essex Fells. Carlton Hill Spur - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Rutherford and Carlton Hill, NJ. The following station is closed; Carlton Hill. Newark Branch - x Erie Railroad Service is discontinued between Hoboken and South Patterson, NJ. The following stations are closed; Harrison (Davis Avenue), Kearny, Newark (Fourth Avenue), Woodside, Cleveland Street / Belleville, Belleville, Nutley (Walnut Street), Nutley, Nutley (Franklin Avenue), Allwood, and Athenia (Colfax Avenue). Discontinued on Saturday, October 1, 1966. Morristown Line - x Lackawanna Railroad Service is discontinued between Netcong and Washington, NJ. The following station are closed; Hackettstown and Washington. (Note: Although Hackettstown and Washington stations are located on the Morristown Line they are service by Boonton Line trains.) Discontinued on Sunday, October 2, 1966. Sussex Branch - x Lackawanna Railroad Service is discontinued between Netcong and Branchville, NJ. The following stations are closed; Cranberry Lake, Andover, Newton, Lafayette and Branchville. In addition to the discontinuances the remaining lines suffered major cutbacks in service. The Boonton line would lose weekend service while the Montclair Branch would only operate the weekday rush. Sunday suburban service on the x-Erie Main Line would end as well. Much of the ROW of the Greenwood Lake branch is still present. Even the bridge over the Pompton River is still there, as is the old Pompton Plains depot. |

I didn’t realize that the multiple concrete arches on the High Bridge had been replaced with the single steel span arch that late. I thought it was much earlier than that. |

Nice.This is an excellent example of how technology changed over the years. The old GC became obsolete.. And added significantly to the air pollution problem in the New York city area. It also divided the Eastside of Manhattan from the Western area because of the open train shed. Incredibly as it sounds, the entire shed was built over with a platform, that stretches for blocks east and west, north and south. The old station replaced with the marvel we have today. The Only way one can tell that they are standing on the platform, are air vents on the sidewalks on side streets, and seismic plates running across sections east and west. Absolutely amazing. The buildings are not floating On the platform, but Through, to soild rock.. Via steel solider beams, huge support girders. The same approach the Creator of Madison Square Garden used to build over the very active Pennsylvania Station. Penn Station sucks when compared to GC.. But is the better of the two, because it provides dual services via East and West.. And even from the north via Amtrak, and the NJ Transit football specials. GC only travels north, and only has commuter services. A connection between the two stations should have been built, and is still possible with the Gateway tunnels plugging into the lower levels, or even the LIRR tunnels. Only time will tell. |
